Salary Cap Dispensation?

Following the offical news of Josh Hodgson retiring, has anyone found out if we are getting salary cap dispensation for his medical retirement? We've seen that happen for medical retirements in the past but I haven't heard anything about it regarding Josh.

Same goes for Andrew Davey. Is there any official news on his medical retirement and whether we will get salary cap dispensation?

  • I believe that is the point for medical retirement, they are paid the rest of the money owing from the contract, though that money is free to use in the cap. Hence why i believe we signed Talagi and happily gave Lussick til 2025.

We have money for a decent Centre and another Winger at least.

    • Yep that is the point, but the NRL has to clear it in order to recieve salary cap dispensation. I haven't heard any news about the NRL authorising it.

      • I think they will, if they didn't then Hodgson will still be playing. I think that was the whole idea of him taking the option, he would have played this year, but better for both parties to take the money off the cap and go into coaching.

If the NRL did not clear it already i doubt he would have retired honestly. I feel the club wanted him to coach and retire, he would've wanted to continue but perhaps thought his body was on it's last legs and coaching was the plan all along anyway.

Davey on the other hand not to sure about, his apparent retirement seems to be on his terms solely, not sure if he can get medically retired. It is from too many concussions so perhaps he can get dispensation. Us signing Tuilagi pretty much confirms Davey is finished, but not sure if he is cleared yet or not.

        • I would think the NRL have no choice but to retire him. can you imagine the potential lawsuit they would face if he kept on playing after trying to retire and it being disallowed.

          • I believe salary cap dispensation often depends on a new injury or complication of an existing injury. So if Hodgson blew his knee out again and retired I don't think we could apply for salary cap dispensation. But his neck is a new injury.

Concussions are a different kettle of fish because players aren't generally forced into retirement following a single concussion but after a number of them.

The NRL wouldn't prevent a retirement, but there are certain conditions that need to be met for salary cap dispensation to be applied.

          • But also clubs do it to beat the system and those players come back later on. That's what they are trying to avoid. Greg Inglis case in point.

  • Well if they physically can't play footy anymore yeah they get medically retired and off the books. Only an issue if club forces them to retire and they not hurt lol.

"Brown's in the conversation for Golden Boot this year. NZ have a great forward pack and they provide a ball runner like Brown the space and time to do his thing. Newcastle have a pop gun set of middles that can barely hold the ball."
