Booooommmm....More to come...

The Melbourne Storm are open to the possibility of releasing Jason Ryles from his contract effective immediately in a move that would allow the new Parramatta coach to start planning for life at the Eels in 2025.

Ryles and his management are expected to meet with Storm officials after State of Origin III to discuss the potential of an early release from his deal that would allow him to put his entire focus on rebuilding the struggling Parramatta.

Ryles’ job title at the Storm is coaching coordinator and his likely departure won’t have a major impact on Craig Bellamy’s premiership assault given he has three assistant coaches (son Aaron Bellamy, Marc Brentnall and Ryan Hinchcliffe).

A Melbourne official confirmed the club would hold conversations with Ryles this week with one eye on him finishing up at the Storm by Friday.

Parramatta are aware of the situation and have no intention of asking Ryles to get involved with interim coach Trent Barrett’s team in 2024.

Ryles is keen to get his feet under the desk and begin planning his staff and roster for 2025. The first big ticket item will be trying to convince boom rookie Blaize Talagi to stay at the club beyond the end of this season after he declined an option in his contract to remain at Parramatta next year.

Ryles will attempt to meet with Talagi over the next 48 hours to sell his vision for the club and entice him to remain at the Eels.

The Dragons are also circling and are planning to meet with Talagi and his family this week with both clubs having the week off with the bye.St George Illawarra officials have shown a keen interest in also signing Talagi’s younger brother as part of a package deal to lure them to the Red V to be part of coach Shane Flanagan’s impressive rebuild.

  • The more I see and read about Ryles, the less impressed I am about us signing him.

    • BEM, it's taken me a week to almost calm down.

Looking at his resume & high praise, I get why he's propped up as the next hot thing. But listening to him speak, I don't get the hype. Even Hannay sounds more self assured. Or confident. Ryles seems a top bloke though. I can see how he works well with players as a hands on assistant. Head coach though? Dunno.

When I compare him to the what I hear coming out of the mouth of tbe real life head coaching wisdom of McDemott's 15 years and overall resume - it's chaulk and cheese. Hands down - not a contest. It's a game declared before it starts.

Then I wonder then about the interview process and what our powers expect. Reputation and optics, my fear all along, can only you get you so far. In the door. Really puzzled.

Really don't know what's going to happen. Hope is all.

      • I think hope is all we really have with Ryles HOE.

His resume is very underwhelming compared to some of the other candidates that missed out.

I strongly believe the accountants that run this club went with the cheapest option as that makes the bottom line look better.

I will support the club and team next year but am under no illusions that we will improve under Ryles and expect us to finish bottom 2 for consecutive years.

      • I'd have been way more optimistic with McDermott. We know that McDermott would've been successful, he has it proven in his CV. Ryles we can only hope he will be.

Feeling your frustration. But the board has hung their collective hats on this appointment, they'll be held accountable if we just get more of the same. If Ryles is dealt the shit sandwich we think he is going to be fed, I'm not overly hopeful we'll see much different. But time will tell. Lets see what assistants he has and how he deals with the roster first.

  • To think we didn't even go for Flanagan or Ciraldo, then we passed on McDermott, we were impressed by Cheika but didn't want to take a chance, yet we took a chance on the Ryles hype machine.

I hope Ryles works out and will support him one hundred percent, but still feel we as a club don't have a footy brain.

    • Ciraldo had an insane hype machine, also known as a defence coach, and like Ryles, they both rejected clubs a year before they signed for another club (Ciraldo rejected Wests and Ryles St George last year). Except Ryles has way more diverse experience than Ciraldo.

Why are you so sure Ciraldo was worth the hype two years ago but think Ryles is just hot air?

      • I would also argue Ciraldo hasnt been able to do anything without Gould pulling all the strings

          • Im just saying the Ciraldo hype was just that - hype.

Give the guy a chance to see what he can do before judging. Lets see if anyone in the back officd has learned from their mistakes

              • And with the exception of a select few, the same could be said about the 'experienced' coaches too.

A lot dont live up to the hype, its not just the rookies
