Ryles Winning with a $6 Million Roster

Jason Ryles is doing a phenomenal job at the helm of the Eels — and when you break it down, he’s doing it with a roster that’s worth just $6 million out of an $11.5 million salary cap.

That’s nearly half the value of many of our opponents.

Here’s a rough breakdown of the current squad he's working with

  • Iongi – $450k

  • Addo-Carr – $450k

  • Penasini – $550k

  • Russell – $280k

  • Lomax – $600k

  • Papalii – $180k

  • (Footy Dean) – $200k

  • Junior Paulo – $850k

  • Ryley  – $170k

  •  Williams – $460k

  • Kautoga – $200k

  • Tuilagi – $375k

  • Hopgood – $400k

  • Walker – $400k

  • Doorey – $300k

  • Lussick – $300k

  • Guymer – $300k

That’s approximately $6 million – and that might even be generous in a few cases.

Yet despite being undermanned on paper, Ryles' Eels have not only held their own, they've beaten the Dragons, Titans, Tigers, Manly, and Newcastle. They’ve also gone down narrowly to quality sides like the Sharks, Dolphins, Bulldogs, and Panthers — all in the last 10 rounds as the team adapts to Ryles' systems.

It’s clear: the coaching staff Ryles has assembled is doing a good job. With a full-strength roster and the cap space to build the squad he truly wants, look out. Parramatta is in seriously good hands.

Also, if we can get jag a win against the Dragons this Saturday then another 2 points with the bye up next,   we'll have a host of players coming back from injury and suspension including

Moses, Sam Tuivaiti,  Moretti, Bailey Simonsson, Ritchie penasini, Ryley Smith most of them due back after the bye.

A run for the 8 is not out of the question

  • Let's not get carried away after beating The Titans lol.  Doing ok , yeah , remarkable ? Yeah Nar .  Hasn't landed a decent signing , haven't beaten anyone of note. Moses gone backwards ( granted many factors out of Ryles control, however he's still gone backwards )  releasing players like RCG for no reason without a replacement , why release him early if it's for nothing ?) we are unearthing a tiny bit of talent which is great , but let's measure where we are at logically and not emotionally.

If we were in the exact same scenario right here right now with the last coach you'd be making so much noise about how poor the coach is performing Yoid crash the sites servers . Tell me I'm wrong old mate.

    • RCG is not doing much at the Titans, granted we could have kept him but he is no great loss going by his performances for the Titans. The improvement on our style of play and the way we are defending is a huge plus. Considering the amount of young, inexperienced players we have, I think JR and the coaches have turned this team around. Hopefully with some experienced players added in the off season we will continue to improve. The green shoots are there.

    • The Titans aren't pusho overs. Look at their pack for starters with the current state of origin prop pairing,  RCG and a backline who can score points quickly.  We had a fullback who's played 10 games, a hooker whose played a handful,  and both of our halves were called up from reserve grade.  The Titans spine were way more experienced.

Mate, give credit where credit's due

The point of the blog was Rylsey keeping us competitive with a huge chunk of our cap missing.

      • I agree we are doing better than we all expected, and yeah I do think Ryles is doing ok.  But if you're judging without bias , we aren't remarkable. We have been quite poor against Cronulla which we shoud've won and quite good against Canterbury which we were expected to get flogged.  It's pretty hard to say we are in better shape than we were with Arthur.  Let's not get caught up giving too much credit just to spite the last dude.

This next few weeks will give us a better guage .

        • Hypothetically speaking Wiz, If we had Haas, Katoa(instead of brown) and Bradman Best, how do you think we'd be going?

    • BA had about another $5 million worth of players and we were playing for the spoon. 3/4 of the current team are Neville Nobodies, yet are more consistent.

  • Winning what?

    • Bem i have great respect for your opinions and views.  I'm just saying that Ryles has us being competitive with a shoe string budget.

      Any you're saying winning what?

Weren't you the person in the cupboard saying the Titans would obliterate us by 36?

No offence but please give Ryles some credit

  • Lot of these cheaper contracts are going to be needed to be upgraded so that will take up some of the cap. Iongi Kautago Ryley smith need upgrades for sure. But we should still have money for a few signings

  • Yeah I love the style of play we are seeing from this Parra team. It's entertaining to watch and a breath of fresh air compared to Parra of the past few years.

I think there are a lot of diamonds amongst this group of players, namely Iongi, Williams and Smith.

And I'll add, if we aren't yet, we need to be locking Iongi up long term - and by long term I mean min 4 years before his asking price explodes.
