Ryles coaching

There has been a lot of comments about Ryles coaching especially after the big losses to Penrith and Storm and now after Tigers.  Funny that they weren't there after our wins but that is a different discussion.

Here is a good example of good coaching.  Andrew John's used 2 examples how Parra exposed Blaize Talagi and Casey McLean in defence with a well run line by backrower then going out the back leading to 2 tries before tonight's game.  Despite playing the Storm, Brisbane and other better sides they used Parra examples of how to break down the panthers.  We scored more points against them then all other sides did.

Bulldogs have already copied the play for a line break and number of half break which gave them early momentum.

I don't think either Fox Sports or Channel 9 have used Parra as an example of good attacking shapes for years, they usually use us as examples how other teams can score points.

Ryles isn't perfect he has made mistakes but our structures definitely make us a better side then what we are delivering.  The problems are middle defence which comes back to the players we have and massive turnover as well as a number of young players.

I think a lot judgement of Ryles decisions such as using Papalii to replace Iongi for a HIA and the signing of Pezet have been fairly critisised but calling him a bum coach is out of line.  He is a young coach and will make mistakes but he has totally reshaped the side and debuted a number of players while fighting a losing battle of recruitment which is a club problem not coaching issue

I wonder if he has copied more of Robinsons style then Bellamy's in relation to fitness for peaking at the end of year.  Melbourne had quality players allowing them to rest players late in the year but Ryles would know he doesn't have the squad to do that so needs a team to peak towards the end of the year.  Making the 8 will private over achieve considering our squad but winning a finals game would be a massive bonus for a young developing side.

The roosters always start the season slow and improve as they go on.  That is how we went last year and hopefully that is the case this year as well.  We have had a tough draw and even if the nature of our losses was concerning we are about where people expected with 2-3 wins what most predicted.

  • It's way too early to make any proper judgement on Ryles coaching ability. We went with Ryles, in reality that's 3 years invested before we even have useful enough data to make a call on whether he's good, bad or average.

The time to question whether Ryles was fit to coach was before we made the decision to make him coach. The next time is at least 3 years after that first decision (given the shape of the roster he inherited).

Contemplating any kind of change in Ryles would be horrifically stupid right now and would mean another 2 years of the next coach reshaping staff, roster and systems before we can begin to even think about judging them on their performance.

We made our bet, it's Ryles. Now we have to do everything we can to help him be successful and then measure him on his merits. He'll get judged when his contract is nearing an end.

    • I think 4 years even Cap. No matter how we go this year and next, unless we go winless or back to back spoons, Ryles will see out his current contract. That's a fair enough time to judge his impact as a coach on this club.

    • I think Ryles is as good as it gets.....bullshit about Cleary or any of the other big 2, I actually think Ryles offers more to our club than Wayne Bennett would, why because he has a vision, he stated before he started he thought Parra was a sleeping giant.

It just so happens, I dont like Walker starting or Pezet playing and JDB not playing.....but it is subjective, my/our feelings are fundamentally irrelevant......shit if we knew as much as him, we would not be sitting on this side of the fence.

The impatience of many on this site is an example of people that will never understand that they don't understand. Its almost or always a scoop for someone to come out with the biggest negative....gee I bet they do well in their job when asked about what their planning to improve in.

Christ we have people on here that think they can read the mind of the players and say so regularly on their posts, even an arrogant prick like me comes up with ideas, not thinking I know better, but offering alternative views and thoughts. We as supporters (I hate the word fans) can do no more than offer support in such ways, not calling the GM Football a moron, or the CEO a dumb prick, rather than insulting their intelligence would be a much better approach.....to start going after the coach this side of his 3rd year is wrong with a capital W.

I would like to see people when they critique things, to offer alternatives and rather than start talking about what will not rather than say it may not  work and automatically portraying negativity......a good example will be a player becomes available on the market and its a race to say.....no point, MON will fcuk it up anyway, when its just as likely that MON has taken it to the coach and he says Nah! .....what more can MON do in that situation?

We have already agreed that this is not MON's forte, but alternatives offered are fantasy games like we should buy the Cleary boys or the latest Hot Dog in the market, not realising that said Hot Dog is not the slightest bit interested in coming to Parramatta. One of the greatest things offered is go out buy x y z best players and that is their advice, Doh! we have experts that can't do that, but we have rabbits on here that know more than they do.

Someone suggested recently that Ryles should blow up in the "Pressor" and cop a 10k fine. Ricky Stuart showed how succesful a ploy that was but no doubt it will make our "fans" feel better......not our supporters I expect?

  • Ryles seems a very good coach to me. There's a cohesion and an urgency to this side. But (as I keep saying) he's being let down by R&R. Our roster is a mess.

  • lol Only a Parra Fan could turn a belting into a positive...no wonder we happy with mediocrity

  • Ryles is contracted to end of 2028? Assuming that's true, I can't seen the club bothering with any coach-talk at all, beyond "we are busy supporting the coach", until mid-2028.
Also, the narrative is currently on Ryles' side. His first season 2025 consisted of the first half being dreadful performances and then finishing off very strongly over the final two months (including victories over Top 8 teams like the eventual premiers). In 2026 we don't know yet but whatever happens the injury crisis is going to be the background context. For example, we can almost field an "injury side", with Iongi, Simmonson, Russell, Penisini, Samrani and Pezet in the backline and Hopgood and Doorey in the engine room.

So I think Fake Midget is right that Ryles has shown promise, because the attack notwithstanding injuries has been good, and the defense has shown it's capable but not consistent. But the narrative at present helps Ryles.

The problem will only be if the team a) self-evidently goes backwards, especially if player discontent emerges in that context, and b) on the back of bottom half finishes in 2025-2026 the Eels c) head into late 2027 as also-rans. Then the pressure will have mounted and the narrative will have changed. Fans will play a part in that narrative.

  • Ryles has shown so so much more then promise. The change he has brought about just cannot be measured on or off the field. We have all seen whom Ryles wanted to be retained or signed from elsewhere as first choices. The team he wanted , we have the same salary cap as all other teams, to lose just about every single Marquee or first choice player recruit we have gone for and to lose juniors that Ryles wanted to keep is our real issue full stop. Fix that and watch Ryles shine.

  • Jason is a great addition to Parramatta results aside. He has really brought the Parramatta DNA out in every area within the club. Junior Rep players are taught about what Parramatta means to its community, how important the club is to so many people from various levels of life. He has a hard edge but is brutally honest. No guessing with Jason.  Nathan Brown is without doubt one of the best blokes you could have around a footy team.  He didnt have NRL success but trust me when I say he is such a footy head.  Perfect foil for Jason becuase he is happy to be an assistant and is no threat but a fantastic support.   The coaches can only do so much.

Recruitment or lack thereof is a big issue. PLugging gaps with injuries, junior reps etc is a juggling act. Some kids can handle it others cant. Physically you might be competitive but the constant pressure in game and training means you can rarely have a day off let alone 2 or 3. We just need to hold course with Jason. Hope we can get 1-2 of the kids into NRL and grab a top 20 type player in next 12 months.  As a we have seen this year, 10% change in performance can alter teams every year, Canberra , Newcastle etc.

Playing the game we are trying to play is high risk high reward. Mistakes , defensive lapses and points are leaked easily.  WE just need to get better at changing momentum in games, and being 90% better at the little areas after points are scored.  IMO
