Ryles coaching

There has been a lot of comments about Ryles coaching especially after the big losses to Penrith and Storm and now after Tigers.  Funny that they weren't there after our wins but that is a different discussion.

Here is a good example of good coaching.  Andrew John's used 2 examples how Parra exposed Blaize Talagi and Casey McLean in defence with a well run line by backrower then going out the back leading to 2 tries before tonight's game.  Despite playing the Storm, Brisbane and other better sides they used Parra examples of how to break down the panthers.  We scored more points against them then all other sides did.

Bulldogs have already copied the play for a line break and number of half break which gave them early momentum.

I don't think either Fox Sports or Channel 9 have used Parra as an example of good attacking shapes for years, they usually use us as examples how other teams can score points.

Ryles isn't perfect he has made mistakes but our structures definitely make us a better side then what we are delivering.  The problems are middle defence which comes back to the players we have and massive turnover as well as a number of young players.

I think a lot judgement of Ryles decisions such as using Papalii to replace Iongi for a HIA and the signing of Pezet have been fairly critisised but calling him a bum coach is out of line.  He is a young coach and will make mistakes but he has totally reshaped the side and debuted a number of players while fighting a losing battle of recruitment which is a club problem not coaching issue

I wonder if he has copied more of Robinsons style then Bellamy's in relation to fitness for peaking at the end of year.  Melbourne had quality players allowing them to rest players late in the year but Ryles would know he doesn't have the squad to do that so needs a team to peak towards the end of the year.  Making the 8 will private over achieve considering our squad but winning a finals game would be a massive bonus for a young developing side.

The roosters always start the season slow and improve as they go on.  That is how we went last year and hopefully that is the case this year as well.  We have had a tough draw and even if the nature of our losses was concerning we are about where people expected with 2-3 wins what most predicted.

  • The one thing I will stand that JR is doing incorrect is starting Walker. The past couple weeks he hasn't been affective that's because he is starting

    • With the loss of players he doesn't have much choice. It's no different to Watson at the chooks, when they were down Butcher and Radley, Robbie was starting him at lock, and Watson is like Walker in a lot of respects, they make a bigger difference coming off the bench than starting.

    • Spot on. He needs to go back to what was working, that was Walker coming off the bench

    • yer, i would agree with that, he really needs to be coming off the bench with the 1, 2 punch with de silva. startr charlie or luca at 13 to start the game and take the heat out of it before the other two come on. I wonder if the high injury toll is why he is starting, with so much in experience across the park with our injury toll, maybe ryles wants experience on the field as much as possible.

    • Walker starting at lock seems dictated by injuries than strategy. Hopgood out for the season and DBL obviously not doing what is asked, and Doorey out too, takes away what were Ryles first three choices for starting lock. Note I include Doorey as he ran at lock in the trials, so JR clearly had starting lock options as DBL, Hopgood and Doorey

  • I do think if Ryles dont get the EELS humming anytime soon & have them be at least a top 4 side Parra needs to pull the pin on him & throw enven the kitchen sink & signing Ivan Cleary as our head coach.

Sign Ivan & both his sons to a $$$ dolloar contract then the players will follow some of the forwards would be perfect as our pack lacks a punch Young Blaze may want to return & play along side his brother along with emerging talent in Iongi , Apa

  • I think he is a good coach with the worst roster in the comp.

    • This!!

  • look, i think ryles can coach, i have seen the green shoots, but injuries and roster are not helping him, he needs time to clean it up and move it forward. Matto gone at the end of the year, suspect a few others will be released as well. Our junior grades appear to be killing it so there is hope, is just getting the right now right. The market is tough atm, like said, two new teams looking to recruit on top of all the existing teams and while i suspect we have cap space, we want to be spending it right and not blowing it up for the wrong people. i had high hopes for de bellin, but it appears not to have worked out, unless he was brought in to mentor the young blokes and knew he wouldnt see much first grade.

With such an inhury toll, while its good to blood our young guns, we still need experience in and around them. We are still in the fight atm and 2 wins and 2 losses. Better than several other clubs , we just need to get some luck with injuries and im confident we will fight for a finals spot this year, really tough draw to start the season so far, this next period is where im hoping we can make some ground.

  • The thing about Ryles, that can be seen as a positive, is that he seems to not be completely his way or the high way. He brought in Nathan Brown to be someone he can talk to about what he should do. He had Eddie Jones in from time to time to offer advice. He drops players that were just brought in if he feels they are not performing.

Now is he stubborn on Walker at 13? Yeah but maybe feels there is nobody else to do what he wants there at Lock.

But overall Ryles seems comfortable leaning on people to offer a new voice. You can tell Moses is involved in game planning by the way they are pretty much aligned in the presser.

He also showed some frustration with defence, his area of expertise. Let's see how the season finishes up and if any rookies show something to build on next year and judge him there.
