Amazed that no one else has posted this a Rugby League Fans lost a true great today, One of the toughest, and yet most genuine human beings on the planet. Played 77 minutes in a grand final with a broken jaw. His son, Scott was of the same breed. His record speaks volumes. Respect to the family. Legend of the game, Endless refrences to his being a great and wonderful man. RIP to a great of our game!

I never seen him play. Was a very down to earth guy.
Rip
Yep one of the true tough men of league a true legend of the game. He will be missed.
RIP John Sattler.
Very fond memories of the way he played and seemed a real gentleman. One of the real greats in football history.
Never met him, nor watched him play. Though all I hear and see is what a tough bastard he was. The broken jaw lives in immortality in Rugby League folklaw.
I know a few Souths fans and they were just beside themselves, they lost one of their own, one of the good ones. Rugby League fans did also. His efforts in 1970 GF will never die.
Well said everyone "satts" goes down as a legend, led one of the great teams of the 60's and he was surprisingly not a big man for a prop forward, mind you he had "thighs" on him like Taumololo and about half the body size......not a dirty player just one tough hombre!
Sluggo, throw us an anecdote!
He was a fair player and didn't care for theatrics either it seemed. NRL 360 told the story that after the 1970 GF he was told to go to hospital and he said he will be right and his wife drove him home, but they had to stop 3-4 times due to him throwing up on the side of the road. But it was him not wanting the attention of going to hospital and that. Just tough.
Your not Sluggy LB, it would have been nice for someone that knew him better than a "fair" player could have said that.
I saw Sattler play many times he was the main reason I had no ambition to play 1st grade even if I was good enough, which I wasn't, if I had I probably would have shit my shorts. He was a great leader and one of the game's toughest. They don't make them like that anymore.
Great response Slugg thank you . Such high praise for Satts . It's a shame Parra did not sign him from Newcastle. South's earlier in time had signed Clive Churchill from Newcastle when he was only 16 already playing first grade in Newcastle comp. And probably many other great players came down to Sydney in that era .
Great loss of a great Rugby League legend. One of the best of all time in a great era of rugby league. Will be missed. Condolences to his family.
