Recruitment and Retention and signings

Ryles states he is is no rush to make signings! I am sorry, but we have an L plate coach who sees no rush? Really, we are second last on a ladder. We will be lucky to avoid the spoon. Unless something changes we have no change on last season, despite the fact that I do see improvements in the squad, but we are still way off the mark.  I am stunned by this statement and we must have so much money available for the right players to improve this squad yet we appear to be doing risky squat! I truly hope there are some things going on in the background but if we keep status quo, we are in a word of pain for years to come. The fact that we still have no decent replacement for Dylan Brown says it all.  I am getting beyond frustrated. We lack serious impact forwards and a quality 6 and centre.  Are we just sitting and hoping or is the Club going to come up with something?  One concerned and frustrated life long eels fan here.

        • That isn't embarrassing at all nor have we lost anything because we never had him in the first place. Look at the future fallout from the dogs roster and we will see if we were outsmarted. He didn't want to come to our club under our terms so I consider that a win.

      • I thought we embarrassed ourselves well before Galvin.

I mean the coaching chase before it was run like a circus first it was Bennett then Bellamy then we got JR.

Cudos for aiming high but just don't come on fox or nine feeling you have to explain yourselves Sean and Jim.I thought it was embarrassing when they said they spent a whole 6 weeks on trying to get Bennett here when in all essence South's had being laying the seed for probably 12 months.

At this point like EA mentions the only way we are getting quality in here is if JR attracts and sells the Parra vision he holds the keys. Our R and R committee are guided by JR he has the keys to the kingdom.

        • Sure that wasn't well handled, nor was the public desperation shown to keep Blaize Talagi. Everyone is aware mistakes have been made in the past, I think in respect of Lachlan Galvin we didn't do too much wrong. Ryles said we were interested (nothing more), negotiations took place and he chose to go to the dogs when we held our position. I'm not sure what the issue is to be honest, we move on.

Players and agents would be well aware we have a significant amount of cap space and spots available. It will happen just have to be patient and not try and force it.

          • I thought they got to cute they went in at the lower levels tried to use JR and Moses as there influence and purely got out manoeuvred by Gus and Ciraldo.

In our position I think we need to go in with multiple options and swing harder first and foremost as we aren't in a position of leverage to be able to influence. This is where we are as a club we are so poorly positioned to attract the type of talent like Galvin it's going to take more than others that's just facts.

            • Do you believe in fate? Fake midget did a good blog recently about in retrospect we landed in the right place with Ryles. It's so common that everyone wants it and they want it now. I've commented a few times on various topics that it isn't wise to be emotional or in a hurry or feel like there's only a single option to take. People are wanting to reach conclusions on papalli based on his debut game. I mean seriously give the kid a chance. I like what Ryles said in regards to the player market, let's just sit back and see what happens.

              • In this discussion much is being said about what could have or should have happened.

One point I will make is that I am glad we didn't get Bennett.

The other thing is that we are now officially struggling in the recruitment area, not sure about retention but Lomax, Iongi and JAC are ones I would not want to lose.....we have a stack of juniors which tend to be a hit and miss scenario when it comes to being blooded as first grade players. I thought Hopgood was a career long player for us and future captain, he is either disallusioned or not recovered from his back injury.

We need to understand that we as fans get very carried away, I do it, we all do it. (except WIZ who would be disappointed when he went to bed with a gorgeous lady and woke up with Dylan alongside him).

I was excited about Volkman and always though that Dean Hawkins was capable, he played enough FG for Souths to say that. Volkman at this point is a failure and Hawkins is as good as his last 3 games. No quick fixes.

One other thing is that we showed with Blaize that we had little idea how to develop a young player. That is not Ryles fault, but grooming that kid as a fullback or even as a centre was a disaster. He could have been blooded like he has been at Penrith now, the guy does nothing but look pretty but you can see him improving. He is put in a position where he may fail, but won't be noticed if he does.

I want to see Taviti consistently make a difference once he is back, I also want to see Twidle and Tatiana (spell) . We were raving late last year about Guymer, but he shapes more as a soldier. We really do believe our own bullshit, I have a suspicion that Joash is a handy back up for fullback but not offering long term solutions.

These are hard questions and I think the people on here are totally misunderstanding the difficulties involved.

I am as long serving fan as anyone or there abouts and I am more concerned about the game than I am about Parramatta......we will emerge but the circumstances need to be right in the game or we are all wasting our time.

            • We never had Galvin, you only had to read between the lines to see he was going to the dogs. Even when all the shit started at the Tigers, there was a divide amongst journalists and commentators as to where he would land, Parra or Dogs. Even after Gus come out and said "we are not interested, we, as a club, have never talked about Galvin, and we have never spoken to Galvin" the journos and experts were still convinced he was going to the Dogs, he was always going to the Dogs from day dot. Galvin only spoke to us to take some of the heat off Gus.

  • I hoping we in talks with Staggs n  Smith n at lease 3 forwards if Tino leaves the Titans we need him i be happy to offer him any thing over $1.5M if i was in charge

  • Well similar to what EA said, the market was bare before Ryles got in there. What we are trying to do, hoping we are trying to do, is manipulate the market where a player like rumoured Jayden Campbell comes up and we nab him where if we sign Sandon Smith now we could look back and say "Well damn, we would have rathered him". It is a risk as no guarentee's something comes up but agents talk, teams have an idea of who could be available. Teams talk.

If we get to December with nothing, then we go in guns blazing demanding answers.

    • Yep, agreed with both you LB and EA. The market is grim, we're at the bottom of the ladder and there are new teams on the horizon to drain the talent pool even more.

Ryles is right, we're going to need to bide our time and be smart. No easy answers.

"💯 on Katoa. He will be the 'next' Cleary.
If Knights think DB is worth $1.3M, I'd be doing the same with Katoa. Lock him in long term and your halfback is set. Moses can play 5/8 until he retires.

"Can offer a player more money than what they are currently on including starting spot - you mean paying overs!
LB, the natives on this site will have a field day bagging MON and the R&R committee LOL "
