I heard a comment on a sports radio program yesterday that got me thinking. The comment was, "the media are causing a strain on Rugby League coaching ranks as the majority of the best minds recently retired are in the media". Obviously, some of these ex-players are coaching or on coaching staff at Origin level. Surely it wouldn't be possible for someone in the media to also be a head coach of an NRL side.
I would think most Eels fans believe Peter Sterling would have made a great NRL coach. Unfortunately, he took the media/commentator path. I think someone like Cooper Cronk would be a great coach, but like Sterling, he has gone into a media/commentating position. I would offer Cronk plenty and try to get him to the Eels as a future head coach.

Doesn't Cronk still work as a consultant for the Roosters AND the Storm? Or has that changed?
Someone kicked a stink up last year about it being a conflict of interest.
That's at least 3 pay cheques Cooper Cronk is collecting. Fox, Roosters and Storm.
I haven't heard that Cronk isn't consulting at the Storm or Roosters this year. I would really like to see him at 1 club (my Eels) full-time. The best coaches usually come from players that spent the majority of their playing careers under great coaches. Cronk certainly did that.
Well he certainly sounds more intelligent, creative and insightful than Brad Arthur when he speaks. Brad Arthur speaks in cliches - it's probably just a front to say nothing to the media, Wayne Bennett style, but as a fan it comes across as very boring and lacking in intelligence.
Cronk at least has some insightful things to say. Which is more than 99% of the league pundits around who all speak in the same old tired cliches.
Many coaches dumb down comments in press conferences. I would think that could be because most Rugby League fans don't understand 1st grade NRL language. Hardcore fans like you and I would understand the majority of things, but most fans wouldn't. I find Trent Robinson is extremely good at explaining things simply and clearly so the average fan, as well as the hardcore supporter, gets something from his comments. I have spent a season involved doing game stats for an under-21's NRL club many years ago and the information provided by the coach to the players before games and at halftime can be confusing. From attacking shapes and structures to defencive patterns and types depending on field position can be extreme. If BA was to talk about these types of things most fans would fail to understand.
It is a fine line between saying something everyone understands and saying something that makes you look smart but most people ask what is he talking about.
A media career plus the add on for consulting some NRL teams is so much more cushy with ZERO pressure. You'd be crazy to throw away that for a full time high pressure and stressful job as head coach in the NRL. A friend's friend of mine is involved as an assist coach in Greek soccer's top tier and he pretty much says the job takes up 16-18 hours of your day. Having to manage 25 differant egos is not easy. If the team isn't winning you're basically not sleeping at night as all the underlying shit comes to the forefront.
Cronk would be a great coach, as would have Sterlo who I wish BA would make an offer to join his coaching crew.
People who coach usually end up coaching because they have traits that lead them that way . The fact Sterling and Cronk went into the media tells me they'd probably don't have those traits .
Cronk is a perfectionist and has great footy mind and work ethic. He wouldn't have the temperament to deal with the current cotton wool generation.
People who are perfectionists and work as hard as him can't relate or understand others enough to be a coach. Would be a great assistant where he can use his knowledge and understanding of the game while letting someone else deal with the different personalities and crap that goes with coaching.
Excellent opening Wizz to a very deep subject about who we are and how we can take control of our life. A 23-minute education to maybe try and explain it in a different way. Yes it is based on science and philosophy.
