Parramatta was in a way part of the first rugby league premiership in 1908 through a side called Cumberland. Rugby Union , the predecessor to Rugby league , was first played in Australia at Parramatta. So it can be argued that Parramatta was associated with the beginning of Rugby League in Australia. That should be where our pride comes from .
Anyway to the end of the history lesson!! One further history lesson though please . That 1908 Cumberland team were seen as representing the western districts of Parramatta. No matches were in the area . The NSW Rugby League could only secure 4 grounds ( in the city or close to ) . The Cumberland club were a breakaway from Rugby Union and were forced to amalgamate with another club after winning only one game in their first season . As we know our current club entered a team in 1947 ,of course 39 years later. I don’t think the players in the team today have that that emotional feeling that I had as a kid dreaming of one day wearing a blue and gold jersey . However I hope the fans lift the team to greater heights soon so that younger fans can experience the emotions of winning a grand final and I can go through the wonderful experience again . So to make this happen SOONER rather than later please keep more positive posts coming on this site and go to the games as often as possible to cheer loudly for your team with such a great heritage .Go the eels !!! Up Parra !!!
I am proud of the coach . The players let me down yes however they have all left great memories in my mind from great performances at times . Once the inconsistency with form is taken care of then its semi final time again .
Its a nice sentiment that your proud of the Eels and your proud of the coach. The idea that our Parramatta club could be argued to be a part of the commencement of Rugby league and your proud of that history, is a nice sentiment. But thats truelly where our problems as a Rugby League club stem from.
You see thats just the typical dillusional view that so many people in our history have taken when thinking about our club, all based on half baked measures, slight of hand, justification of lies and pretence and fake fairy tales. Near enough has always been good enough for our club and our club administrators and im sick of it.
The Cumberland club has absolutely nothing to do with the Parramatta Leagues Club, they were completely seperate identities based some 39 years apart. Cumberland came into existance from the Western Suburbs Rugby Union Club, and they didnt even form untill the second round of the inaugural competition. They represented the Cumberland Plains which is not defined as Parramatta and is in fact defined by the boundaries of the Blue Mountains to the city of Sydney, North to Hornsby Heights and South to Picton, some 3000 square kms. Also they didnt play at Parramatta but the Sydney Show ground "Agriculture Park / Moore Park, Wentworth Park and Birchgrove Park. All these ground were in the innder city of Sydney. They were actually called The Central Cumberland Fruitpickers with a C as their emblem. Further Cumberland lasted some 8 games before disbanding, they have the offical worst record of all clubs to have ever played the game in a state / NRL format having lost 7 of the 8 games. In their last game they could only field 11 players and had to borrow two players from Norths just to play the game. The club then wound up after that game.
"Whats to be proud of" , they were late into the competition, they hold the worst record ever for any club, they couldnt field 13 players and they disbanded after 8 games, and they have no affiliation or continuity with the Parramatta club formed in 47. Sorry but im not proud of that, and actually it sickens me that, that is accepted from parra fans as something to be proud of.
Thats our problem, instead of shooting for the stars, being the best, buying the best, playing the best, striving to be the best, we accept mediocrity, failure, sweeping things under the carpet and now adopting failed teams with the worst record ever as something to be proud of.
Im a proud Parra supporter, but i am not proud of the mediocrity, the give up attitude, the smile after a loss attitude, the near enough is good enough sentiment. No Bloody way, I'm not proud of that. I'm proud of our legends with their hearts on their sleeves giving it all for our blue and Gold, like Thornet, Lynch, Price,Cronin, Sterling, Kenny,Grothe, Ella, Hindmarsh, Burt, Edge, Wynn, Beetson and O'reilly. These guys didnt pretend, didnt do things by halves, they wernt proud or smiled when they lost, These men I'm proud of, but i'm not proud of some bullshit fairy tale that Parramatta Leagues club are somehow laying claim to a false history of being there in 1908.
As real fans, Lets make our damn club accountable and be proud of them for doing their best. Close enough is not damn good enough, and by the way currently we are no where near good enough, but i will still travel the hundreds of K's each week to watch my team.
Blue Eel thank you for your in depth reply . The sad things is that no where near the standard of most of those players you mentioned has ever been replicated in any one single Parra team since the majority you mention played together in the 1980’s . My hope and passion for the blue and golds has never been less than when they finally took out the premierships in 1980’s . It’s still blue and gold lights out on my verandah for me. May there soon be more memorable wins for our great Parra .
No where near the standard of most of these players!!! That's my point Driza, there have been lots of players that have had the skills of the players I mention, and a lot of players had more skill then some of the players mentioned, however what these men have in common was heart on your sleeve, never say die attitude, that made them Parra Legends and players to be proud of. Further they didn't except mediocrity nor did their coaches at the time. All these players In Interviews over the years mention how tough and how intimidating their coaches were, how they played for their coach and they were expected not to take a backward step. Attitude to be proud of, our current culture and one that has been excepted for way to long is not the same, the players do not feel the same nor do they perform with that attitude, further it is not instilled in them by the coaching culture at Parramatta and it's not expected. This I am not and cannot be proud of.
Blue Eel there have been 12 to 16 team coaches per year ( I know a lot of coaches were repetitive coaching over and over unless and until they were moved on ) since Parra last won the premiership in 1986 over 30 years . Over that period maybe only half a dozen coaches have ever been any where near successful with form reversal as Parra and Roosters master coach Jack Gibson . So it is harsh to expect current Parra head coach to do any better than he has with only question mark over the teams lack of consistency this year .
So in your mind the fans are the reason for the teams shithouse record these last 10 years?
No mate, the players and the coach are and no amount of positive posts will change that.
Only thing that can change this clubs fortunes is an over haul of the playing squad and the sacking of one of the worst coaches in the history of the Eels.

Get stuffed! Give us a team and coach to be proud of. Is that positive enough?
