Probable team list and depth - which two to buy?

1. Clint Gutherson (c)
2. Maika Sivo
3.
Michael Jennings
4. Waqa Blake
5. Blake Ferguson
6. Dylan Brown
7. Mitch Moses
8. Reagan Campbell-Gillard
9. Reed Mahoney
10. Junior Paulo
11. Shaun Lane
12. Ryan Matterson
13. Nathan Brown

Interchange
14. Ray Stone
15. Kane Evans
16. Daniel Alvaro
17. Marata Niukore

Depth (underlined is development)

Wing (3): George Jennings, Haze Dunster, Charlton Schaafhausen

Centre (3): Jaeman Salmon, Brad Takairangi, Ethan Parry

Halves (1): Rhys Davies

Hooker (2):  Will Smith, Kyle Schneider

Middle forwards (4): Oregon Kafusi, Peni Terepo, David Gower, Stefano Utoikamanu

Edge forwards (2): Andrew Davey, Salesi Fainga

If we can have four development players then that is 28/30 spots filled. We have 2 to fill and no million dolar players. What are our weaknesses? Back-up specialist hooker who wont get in the way of Schneider? Back-up for Juniors role? It is uncertain Kane will repeat last season and our bench could lack impact unless the young props push up. If Mennings does not sign do we go after Latrel? Would give us plenty of strike power on the left. Marata is down as an edge, but do we need tore second row depth?

  • Latrell is exactly what we don't need. Bad attitude. We saw what happens with players like that with Hayne. Dose more damage than good & that's why the roosters are happy enough for him to move on. We need players that are willing to roll their sleeves up & become great NRL players, not kids that think they are already stars. Remember Jacob Lobo. A beast with the NRL world at his feet until his attitude got in the way.

    • I don't see how Latrell has a bad attitude. Bit of a grub and immature but he can grow out of that. I don't see him as a hayne in our team too I think he knows his place. I think he'll go where he can play fullback and I think the tigers is his team. Imo that's a good signing for them and an odd signing for us.

  • The team you have selected for me is on the money. The only thing that may change would be BA staying loyal to Kane Evans and RCG off the bench

I think also that Marata is seen more now as a middle. It will be interesting to see what the development squad looks like.

Further I would be surprised if Stefano misses an Nrl contract. It would leave him vulnerable to a poaching raid

    • I hope that's incorrect John. Marata hit's the line hard and was very good on the edges earlier this season. If they play him as a middle forward he is likely to go down the same path as Tepai - never reaching his full potential.

      • That’s a fair point. I think we will no by the end of 2020

    • I was including Stefano in the 28 (Mennings and Stefano not bolded as not signed as far as I am aware)

Schaafhausen, Davies, Schneider and Fainga likely in development (underline was not working)

      • What do you know about Schaafhausen. Seemed to come from nowhere and I think from memory held a spot on the wing for Wenty in the last game

        • He looked very good in the Wenty GF. Think he had an off field issue at the Tigers before he came to us. I would have him at the top of the queue if we need a replacement for one of our wingers

    • John, to me Evans is the run on prop with RCG off the bench to start the year.

TBH, I do not see Gower being signed as NRL player and probably more as a reserves/canterbury cup (whatever its going to be called next year) leader and captain. With the NRL side being 30 players all up and with 4 reserves each that takes the needs for players up the 34, come end of June, with development players allowed in NRL.

Currently we have 26 NRL players with Matto now in the list with MJ still to sign on, leaving 3 spots open.

      • I agree Colin I think Rd 1 BA will likely start Evans in the run on side then judge it as it unfolds. He was fairly ruthless last year with the forwards and it paid off.

Their is no guarantees for position s. I would like to see the likes of Kaufusi and Utoikamanu have a real crack and force their way into the 17.

I mentioned watching the Dragons game again the other day. Kaufusi was really good in that game. Ran well and good defence. He is such a big lad and good leg speed

Haha, yeah. Sanders cost us 12-18 points. But he's still young, got loads of potential, time to work on his game and between the ears.
