I just finished reading a very concise summary of yesterdays trial by 60's on TCT

Yesterday Offside made a post over the subtlety of the position change's mooted in the above heading. I suggested it was worth a blog on its own and so I will sow into the subject the guts of the reply I made to 60's on TCT.

Whilst watching yesterday, I could not understand the JA move but the idea certainly has merit once I thought about it and Offside explained it well.

It surprised me mainly because BA has never been one to make structural changes of such a nature. Do you think it is coming from the two consultants (question to 60's) and have they been that influential this quickly.
Leads me to ask the question how hands on are the consultants and is there a formal process where everyone comes together that you are aware of ?

How does Ryan Carr fit at this stage, as it seems we will be a lot more fluid between the main team and the NSW Cup side than previously. Players like Bryce Cartwright will get more time in Reserve Grade and I think it is good for these players to get more match time before being called in. Others like Moretti and Rodwell come into the same equation, also Opacic. Mention some more?

It would seem reasonable if we are going to replace/need a winger that Blake is likely (excluding an outside purchase) which means the JA / Brown switch would be on.

Now I am not getting carried away with JA’s capability but I could not help but think the way we used to switch Kenny and Ella as centre’s & 5/8’s…..it also confirms (in my mind) that Dyllan is not true 7 at this point of his career and that such a switch between 5/8 and centre will not hurt one bit. (probably help his try assist record which so many have been obsessed with);

My optimism is at a premium still and lets not get lost on the press pushing the early flyers syndrome, we know circumstances for that in the past were pertinent and this side is much better balanced than any previous since the renaissance.

The purpose of this blog on IEE is to see how we think about the potential of the switch ?

Is this a way for BA to get JA into the 17? Should this only happen if we need to replace an injured winger? Is Mitch Rein a better choice for a 14 in giving protection for Reed Mahoney.

Seems like a discussion that will have a number of variable views, personally my mind is open, interesting to hear what others think as it will form the imperative of the bench makeup.

  • Pops, a big YES from me with what i saw. The 3 or 4 Moses, Dylan, JA , Waqa, swapping around in real time will not only help our cause as each compliments the others weaknesses, but also confuse and exploit opposition defences. Dylan has not showed consistant attacking qualities and has not been a second point of attack nor a foil for Moses, but wow he is an awesome link and and one of the best defenders and can run like the best when unleashed. JA has attacking brains and is not shy about using them, however he lacks experience, and the defence. Moses has developed as our leader but has lacked a foil or a second option in attack to take the focus of the oppositions defence. Moses will be even better with the room to move.

Dylan will become the player we can all see with the confidence he gains from not having to be the second point of attack nor an organiser, JA will continue  his development and provide attacking options with increasing skill, and Moses just goes  to origin level with another attacking partner available and some serious talent out wider.

I love the idea so much, with these 3 being in the same side, the only thing that will derail it is the surname that one of them has and the absolute discrimination some on here towards that surname.

    • Good post  BE

      • Yes, BE....a very good and optimistic approach, your enthusiam can be catching if that is how other's see it as well.

    • Well said BE, great points.

JA seems to be reading the game really well already. In both trials, he’s created tries by being in the right spot through hard work & awareness (not speed) when no-one else was. Still feel he's passing too far from the line but sure thats being worked on.

One thing I love about the switch is; with Dylbags footwork / passing ability, i can see him putting Waqa into space alot more, and Waqa in space / one on one with a defender is a very good thing.

  • For mine, I was very impressed with Russell.

    BA should've also tried this:

    1. Russell

    2. Waqa

    3. Brown

    6. Guth

    7. Moses

    • Yes, that is a genuine alternative and Simmonsso taking the fullback role even more pertinent as he has first grade experience in the position. I think small steps for Russell if this is to be his first full year.....lets assume though that he plays 10 games and Sivo comes back in......he then could be considered as a full back on merit alone . i.e. not circumstantial

      • A number of our young guys are really standing up, and the combinations that can be swapped around and manipulated are going to make us stronger. One gets the feeling it  wont be long and Gutho, Moses and co will become the old "in NRL terms" hard experienced heads that lead a mix of home grown young guns towards grandfinal day.

  • I'm not against trying things like this out, especially in a trial or in games when playing much weaker opposition. Jake is still very young, I can't help but see a wobbly foal every time I see him move. He should not be playing in games against the top sides this year unless injuries dictate.

I don't think we need to rush him but it would seem the powers that be have seen enough that they're now trying to fit him into the team.

If that's the way we go, I hope it works. I just hope that if it doesn't work, we don't try to force it to happen.

  • Thanks for the acknowledgement I've been thinking about it and reflecting on last season it wasn't uncommon for one of the bench to get minimal time Stone and Cartwright for example had a few 10min spells

Maybe the thinking is if a back line player goes down you loose less in Dyl moving but that been said its also possible that JA gets no game time for weeks on end so maybe in terms of player development rotateing that role with JA and Perham possibly Hands this allows these young blokes opportunities to play 1st grade without stunting their development

    • Acme and Offside, wise heads coming to the fore.... my inclination is Rein is better than we have seen so far and he is the logical 14 to start with. This switching concept I think has more application if we need to actually replace an injured player/winger ......I still haven't/can't make up my mind yet just the same.

PS I like the wobbly foal analogy....lol
