Poppas Corner: The Challenge is beyond us, What do we do?

Posters are full of advice, surprisingly most of them mainly intelligent.

I thought Seraph laid out the points rather well, equally Chiefy and Mick outlined the Unicorn case for Ryles ongoing support.

Personally me being a Unicorn I cannot get into bed with them but have sympathy for the "give Ryles a go" i.e. i don't think we can do anything else!

Actually the idea of helping him is not really a choice, whatever he has planned he has this year to complete it. Macy refers to bringing Brian Smith back into help but you really cannot do that in the context that its Ryles team. I don't think there is a front office choice, sacking anyone needs to be Ryles job. If he feels he is not getting the support from say MON or Jim then he has to go to the chairman and say so.

Do I have any answers, not a clue!

Standing as the optimist for so long my optimism has gone, now replaced with forlorn Hope!

I did allude last week that something is not right, and I will comment on some ongoing criticism against individuals, Junior Paulo tried his guts out yesterday and really did try and lift them, he played long minutes and Ryles could see that he was driving them. Hopgood had a really high defensive work rate and its hard to feature in attack when you are doing so much work. Williams put in and had the most run metres. People will say the fullback went ok, but he lack's vision, as did the half back and unfortunately Dyllan Brown went from about 5% from last week to say 15% yesterday......he is 85% down on the player he should be. He does not want to be there and whilst I never would have thought of dropping him, he probably will be on his last chance next game if he hasn't had it already. JAC returning next week is our last chance before Moses to spark the side.

One note is that Newcastle must be feeling a massive dose of heartburn over their decision, nobody there would be impressed if he is actually "dogging" it.

Now theree is nothing to be hopeful about and on the quiet I would like to see, and it most probably is behind some closed doors, some accountability for the rest of the coaching staff. They cannot have been idle, where is Moa with his defensive plan, Wisey with his attack and not to mention Brown and Gasnier.

Our Reserve Grade won yesterday which is a small plus, unimpressively I am led to believe, but any win in this environment has to be a positive.

To quote a question I posted yesterday, my wife asked me if I have ever seen a worse performed Parra team than this one, my answer was yes, just can't remember when.

Making one final point, one month ago I was supremely confident and excited about this coming year and had no doubt we would be a top 4 side. Needless to say I am pulling my head in and scurrying away looking for a hole to hide in.

Hang in there, when you a Parra supporter you have no choice, it's never been any different.....rusted on.....you bet!

  • Optimism Pops I'm with you because I understand the premise but we have no choice like you alluded to.

I'll use the Mike Tyson quip everyone has a plan until you've been hit.

Well Jason MoN Jim Sarantinos and everyone involved around the off season decisions and direction of this team you've been hit now I await the response.

Parachuting players in won't change anything. There has to be a massive attitude change behind the scenes a circle the wagons us against the world siege mentality.

The most important thing I heard from Ryles in his presser was keeping everyone tight if we see splinters in the playing group it's the spoon for sure.

  • We don't have the cattle, particularly in the middle. It's as simple as that. That's on MON.
At this stage of his career Jnr is a bench prop. He showed he is effective in that role but as a starter he has diminshed greatly.
Joe O is a 4th place bench / NSW Cup starter at best.
It starts there. We have the worst starting Props in the NRL, and our bench just gets worse after them.
Any Head of Football would have seen this huge hole and acted accordingly. But we did precisely nothing. Terrell May was available and I don't think we even spoke to him. That's just nuts.
Where is all our spare salary cap? No Gutho, RCG, Sivo and we've signed who exactly?
I'm putting this squarely on MON. I don't know if Ryles is a good or bad coach yet but I know for sure that Wayne Bennett couldn't get this squad playing finals footy.

    • Wayne Bennett wouldn't have signed rejects either. He's over there ploughing Humphreys and flicked his used condom in Hawkins on our lawn.  Remember , I queried our personnel , asked how these shitty signings were going to have us at NRL level on the paddock , only to be snapped at with ,

" could you just give it a rest for 24 hours "

Moving on, our only option right now is to sack MON , immediately and appoint someone with proper experience and connections.  It's 5 years too late , but it needs to be done. He has driven us so far backwards it's not funny.  BA knew it, every person in the NRL knows it, and that's why every decent coach available knocked us back.  Get rid of him, and then at minimum, if Ryles gets punted we can attract a coach, but ultimately if he goes we may just get someone who can attract a few decent players that are itching for a starting spot for this season and Ryles can have a half decent shot .

Galvin lol, people are dreaming if they think that kids coming to this rabble .

      • Specifically Mutts you have been hard to read in recent times, you smack of negativity and criticism but mainly you focus on the past and offer little for the future. Its not easy and my observation is that rather than being proactive you tend to ingnore the pragmatic aspects of your feelingsi.e Wayne Bennet and what he could achieve with this squad is totally irrelevant to the problems we face.

Take note that the opportunity is getting rid of Mon or Front Office staff, then Ryles is the man to create it.

ie. if the cause of all this is observable from the people closest to it. It should be done, lets Ryles say he doesn't feel co-operation or working with say MON and the CEO, then he should do something about it.

My guess is he would know by now what has happened and will fix it the best way possible, assuming it is in his power to do so. Some players like May etc were considered but not regarded as a culture fit. JAC was the same but passed the muster.

You make the point about the "cattle" and I would agree in principle and hindsight. Say 6 weeks ago I didn't have a problem with our cattle. This is now proven wrong! I suspect that Ryles maybe in the same boat. How does he fix it....well there is no point in sacking MON if you don't have a replacement. Likewise if you can come up with a solution with the ability to bring players with him....Lets do it now!

        • My negativity is well founded. Clearly. There is no silver lining currently. One game off a spoon last year and hot favourites for it again this year.
As for being proactive I've stated several times what I'd do. I'd make Matt Cameron the highest paid CEO in the NRL and give him the tools and authority to enact whatever changes he'd deem necessary, which undoubtedly would include the exit of MON. Only the new Chairman can make that happen and I sincerely hope he does.
And if I could be bothered trawling through old posts I also stated before the season commenced that I was concerened about our middles particularly our prop rotation. I'm not paid to have foresight but certain individuals are paid to have precisely that. Starting the year with Jnr and Joe O, it was not that dfficult to see we were in trouble.
BTW I told you Moses injury would likely be longer and you enthusiastically told me I was wrong. Turns out I might know a thing or two.

          • I mean , proving Ploppa wrong is like proving the kids wrong. You know hen the kids can't find something and you just know it's smack bang right in front of their faces , but you still have to get up and go and point it out ? Thats what it's like proving Ploppa wrong.

You get no satisfaction and it's more just a chore helping out the unfortunate.

            • Oh! Wizzy, I am grateful for your help of the old and the frail on here. Me being a child member of the nursing home etc.....but there is an old saying about running with the foxes and hunting with the hounds...... Mutts has had more goes on here about your negativity than Trump has friends in the Kremlin.

Lets say your friendship on here with him is convenient in the circumstances.....Sleep over friday night?

          • What you know or don't know is not the point, I started by saying you have been "hard to read in recent times " basically because of your "well founded" negativity, but you would also admit you have been critical of others about their negativity making that somewhat hipocritical (not me by the way, no accusation there).

My comment about Moses injury was not with regard to enthusiasm about being right, the only enthusiasm was what I hoped for given the statistics that are publicly known for the type of injury. You are a lot closer to the medical industry than I am, you should have explained why. The article doesn't as well explain anything but that it is slow healing.

Take a step back the initial injury (last year) was a "jones fracture" which has a healing process of between 8 to 12 weeks. This ran its course and Moses resumed for one game and then was picked in Origin. This year 2025 our knowledge implies but doesn't say that he had a sore foot where the screw on the Jones fracture was centred. When I looked up the medical definition it implied a 4/6 week period, my implication on the early rather than the later as it was a rest and reheal.

Now he comes out with a view of it being more like 9 weeks. This is the same result as if it was rebroken. That maybe the case but this was never mentioned to my understanding.

Now it may turn out that you know a thing or two .....is there any reason/way you cannot qualify that. I was only working with the knowledge available, why are you holding back or more importantly what is Moses and the medical staff holding back.

Sorry for the long way of getting there but if it is just a case of what I am missing, so be it.

          • The Dogs are the blueprint here. Im just spitballing

Excellent Head of Football  Bellamy ? B Smith , Super League Gun who is involved with Wigan they seem to win everything?

A Business heavyweight ie like a Laundy or someone with a love of Rugby League with deep pockets but an ability to let the experts run it ?  Didnt James Packer bank role the generational change at the Panthers ? when Gus tapped him on the shoulder for a few dollars!

anyway somethings gotta change and the root of all evil is MON what does he know to be covered in so much teflon lol

Who is Moa Wisemantal anyway what are their crednentials.   as for teh losers from St George that says it all just a job for the boys senario

    • I think you have summed it up nicely, Muttman. Agreed on Props, and I am totally miffed by their recruitment decisions. I can only assume they were a bit spooked by why the Roosters were releasing May; maybe they thought there were some discipline issues. I have written this year off too, and I am a die-hard fan who always looks on the bright side (You have to if you support Parra, I suppose). I just hope they can improve when Moses returns and win a few games before the end of the season. I still have faith in the coach. He is a rookie, but I think he has a lot of footy smarts. I just hope he can cope with the heat, because it is going to be a long season, and the fans are already baying for blood. Next season, he will have a chance to pick up a few more players and build the squad.
