Poppas Corner: Origin Blindness

How can anyone say that the half back that has led his side to 4 straight grandfinal wins and one of them almost single handedly cannot play Origin Football.

Up until last night he had played 16 games witha 50% win record. He doesn't need  to be defended as the best player in the world (I am no Cleary fan as a person) his record proves he is. His coaches for NSW (forget last year he was out) have been pretty ordinary and Meninga at a National level does/did him no service.

It can only be dumb Parramatta fans that would always blame the half back when the forwards provide no platform.

The answer is simple Laurie Daley was completely out of his depth. He coached this side from world beaters in round 1 to nothings in round 3. He just does not get how the modern game has changed since he played. That's a reflection on him and the NSW process, not the game.

His interchange use last night was disgraceful, his understanding of how the game would be refereed was also total naiveity. Klein managed the game in round 2 and now come round 3 just left the game to its own devices. Qld played with lightening play the balls and laid all over the NSW ruck, basically discounting any play the ball speed NSW could garner. They finally woke up to that in the last 20 minutes and guess what, they were pretty even through that period.

Get over it, I'm a NSW supporter and we were completely outsmarted and out coached.

    • Moses won't play Origin next year

      • He may if Cleary is injured and he demonstrates good form in the club rounds, assuming he plays any?

Katoa will be everyones obvious choice ( but suspect he is going to be marked very heavily from hereon) I wonder how effective Moses would be in that Dolphins side with Hammer at Fullback and Herbie in the centres. Throw in 2 high class wingers and a go forward pack?

They have 2/3 players out with season ending injuries don't forget or they would be knocking the door down in this competion.

  • It's not often I disagree with your thoughts Poppa, but in this instance i do.

Cleary is good..very good, and when surrounded by a brilliant system and equally quality players at Penrith he shines bright.

When put amongst the games elite he has never shined, not at Origin, nor for his Country...it could be mental or possibly intestinal fortitude...he doubts himself on the biggest stage.

At club level great forwards make ordinary halfbacks look good, Great halves with ordinary forwad packs still compete and win more than they should.

At the elite level the forwards generally cancel themselves out, they are all great..some just have better days and games than the others......BUT.. the great half leads the forwards, corals them to where they need to be and controls what is coming now and next... that is not Mr Cleary.

Moses,  in my mind has shown much more at that level, never overplaying the hand but doing a job.

    • I was always appreciate your opinion Archie and to reinforce your argument, you would have to say every man and his dog is saying the same about Cleary. All the newspaper's have their knives out and the "autopsy" is showing all the signs of an inferior player (lol). My judgement is when you cut up a champion (I'm no special fan of Cleary). then it can bite you on the arse! ...... I will agree he may have some burnout and not come back from his shoulder injury as strong as he was?

I looked at your time of your post and it was a bit past 7 last night.....I have since posted a fair bit on the subject (on this blog) and also Moses. Rather than repeat myself have a look at what I said and by all means come back with your views. I will always respect them mate.

You never know this arrogant old prick may have it wrong! again! LOL

  • Who cares..

  • "Get over it, I'm a NSW supporter and we were completely outsmarted and out coached."...exactly right, well said. I reckon if Cleary was QLD halfback yesterday, they would've put 50+ on us.

    • Thanks Joey, good to see some unbiased views.

  • Mate, nobody really cares about Origin.  Id rather the Eels beat even a low club like the Titans than the Blues winning the series 3 nil.

I couldn't give a flying fuck who wins it.  I was actually cheering qld as it took huge courage to do what Munster had done

    • Chiefy, don't undersell yourself so heavily, the fact that you are a nobody doesn't mean you have to represent them?

PS It is very obvious that is not the case when you look at pre and post discussions, not to mention breaking all records for an Australian Sporting event.

When you grow up and put your big boy pants on, you will realise there are lots of things outside your "myopic" views of many  life events and that's not even going near your obsessions with certain Rugby League coaches that may or may not have coached the team you follow.....what was that team again Titan's ??

PS How do you give a flying fuck?

      • Its ok popo. Sometimes it's good to let a little steam out on the system. Try it sometime
