I think it would be unfair to say that the halves pairing won Bronco's the game, Reynolds off injured, Hunt off HIA.....

Why start this way after a great GF, where'e the revelance of that opening?

I say this because there seems to be a discussion (on the 1EE) about old players and young players.....seemingly about coaching styles. Not the Storm Coach but of all things the Parramatta Coach.

The reality is both coaches Bellamey and Maguire did a great job, the discussion should be more about the depth and lets not mention "Reece Walsh". Before you start raving about coaches and the like, you could/would (unless your blind) say that Walsh single handedly got them(Broncs) to the GF and equally so, won it for them.......... Coaching aside!

Lets move back to this discussion and the debate over whether Maguire was a huge mistake on our part in not grabbing him instead of Ryles.

Well I am going to say that argument is subjective and whilst I have an opinion I think it bears discussion rather than debate, one thing I am certain of is that Maguire is not 10 times better coach than Ryles.

I support Ryles for his vision and the way he has handled this/his mission.

Someone else can say what Maguire would have done if he had been appointed the same time as Ryles, I am certainly not knocking him and I am not a great believer in he can only win with "stars" in his team. It can be argued in someways that you have to be a special coach to even do that, as many coaches have failed with "star laden" teams!

Now if you wanted to start afresh tomorrow with Ryles and Maguire as the two applicants and knowing what we know now after yesterdays Grand Final. Who would you pick as your coach for Parramatta and why?

  • Madge has a set of skills which have been shown to work in certain circumstances. He is great at instilling the winning edge and supreme fitness in a talented side. Compare him to BA - in the year we made the GF Madge would have stood a much better chance of getting us across the line, but he wouldn't have had a hope in hell of building the side to that point like BA did.

Parra right now are NOT the Broncos. We aren't stacked with talent, X factor or experience to their level. If we ever get to that point then a pivot to someone like Madge to finish the job might be worth thinking about. But right now we need someone to strap in for the long haul and build a team...that is definitely not Madge.

Let's also wait and see whether the Broncos can maintain the rage or whether the Madge burnout effect kicks in and the players start to become less effective over the next season or two. Madge is great in short bursts to get a job done, you just don't want to let him outstay his welcome (not unlike Gould and his club building).

    • Can't argue with any of that Cappy.

  • Great question at the end as the squad we have now started by Ryles is a little more friendly to Madge. But being loyal, I'll stick with Ryles. I love the bloke. I just feel so comfortable with him as our face.

    • I agree LB. I too am comfortable with him as our face.

I don't as much like the idea of having an Arsehole for a Face

  • Good question Poppa although I'm more than happy to stick with Ryles.

From what I've seen of Ryles, he could be something special although Todd Payten did something similar at the Warriors before going to the Cowboys where he has greatly dissapointed.

I don't think Maguire comes to Parramatta and makes the progression Ryles did this season.

Brisbane would have been a whole lot more dangerous if Ryles was there and implemented a similar style to what he has at Parramatta with a genuine ball player at lock like Dylan Walker, its scary that Walsh could be better than what he already is, in a different system I think he could be.

    • Thanks JB, its actually not a question I would have entertained accept there seemed to be some discussion along the lines of comparison.

I am as stated much happier with the vision from a total point of view rather than a sugar hit! of a quick premiership and die.

What I do aknowledge is that older coaches have everyright to learn from past experiences, how that applies to Maguire we can only wait and see.

A good example of a vision is Stewart down at the capital, he has obviously learnt a hell of a lot and it seems to me that he has enough young players down there off the back of this years learning experience. I say this because he is an older coach who has tried many things, he is entitled to figure a few things out going forward.

  • Titans making a play for Bellamy to join in 2027 in back room role. Before people bitch and moan about why we can't get him he wants to go to Queensland where family is, so he would not go anywhere else anyway.

But that is a play we need to do, someone with pull.

    • Gus Gould

  • I think Ryles has been exceptional to this point. Got rid of egos and inflated salaries, tried to get rid of certain contracted players that were not performing.

'Has unearthed some real talented youngsters.

My concern has been not being able to land players in demand or keep players they wanted to keep. Whose fault is that, I don't know.

Ryles and Madge however are in differing stratospheres when it comes to coaching. One has 2 premierships with 2 clubs, has been a successful international coach and a successful Origin coach as well. The other is a Rookie.

Madge has not been able to create a playing roster to improve a club from the bottom of the table to the top of the table. When he has the best players, he looks unstoppable, but then who wouldn't.

Horses for courses, happy to support Ryles right now. Throw in Some talented players like Walsh, Carrigan, Haas,  Mam, Staggs and Ryles might just win us a premiership too.
