Now we currently have a system in place that is called "the golden point" but we don't play for that..... we play for 2 points. WHY!
Well lets set some basic premises..... our game is all about TV Rights and coverage, whilst arguable this game is built for a TV audience, its reflected in the ratings. The reason it exists in its current high profile is because of the money it generates from a electronic audience. The Golden Point is a gold mine for the Broadcaster and has to stay as way of keeping fans on the edge of their seats/lounge chairs.
Can you remember the day that we went home disappointed because it was a draw and of course it was a lucky one or one where we deserved to win and didn't. BUT we still got a point! Well most of you probably can't but I know how I felt back in the day.
I think it is worse to go 80 minutes, get a draw and then potentially go home with nothing.......the current situation.
There is an argument that the teams are then playing for an available 3 points and not two......I just don't have a problem with this. If we want that sort of equity in the game, you could look everywhere for anomalies.
GO back to the original opening Paragraph.....i.e GOLDEN POINT that is singular to me.
Now with regard to the commercialism, at present the 2 Tribal groups supporting a game, one walks away pissed off and the other is relieved that they won, maybe even because of a flukey circumstance that created a field goal.
There can be a lot of discussion on a "golden try" etc, but that leads to deliberate penalties to position same that would entitle a win by a penalty goal. I do not have a problem with that and if a draw was still enabled it would be fair, but also unlikely as a field goal would still be the chaser. Unless they elimanated Field Goals in the Golden Point Period...... not a bad idea actually?
I had this discussion with a good friend recently and he defended the current system vociferously.....I feel just as strong that the team drawing at the end is at least entitled to a point and it will make for a more interesting "table" regardless.
Over to you my friends, but I am told I will be smashed on my view!
PS Coming up with a better solution is an obvious answer, but you cannot go back to nothing and call a draw a draw because you would be negating the TV rights which is the life blood of the game. I know and accept that is a point that some find distateful.

I like the golden point plopp, it's exciting and who could begrudge a young family who've paid x amount to come out to a game, to get the bonus of extra time.
I'm sure 99% of fans under 18 absolutely love golden point.
Get with the times poppas. There's plenty of support for gp
Read it again, Chiefy.
I am in favour of it. The golden point that is, not the golden 2 points.
Ok lol .
i see it a little different perhaps then you Pops, I see it as the "Golden Point". At the end of 80minutes and the game is drawn each team has 1 point. They can earn a Golden Competition point by scoring first in extra time and take the 1 competition point from the other team. Hence Golden Point. If neither team can do it the status Quo remains as a draw and each team keeps their 1 competition point.
I must be expressing it badly Bluey, because what you have said is exactly what I am supporting, I threw in some derivatives about time and alternatively a version of golden try, but my main point was that the losing side in golden point games do not walk away with nothing......as you said at the moment of 80 minutes a draw connototes a point each.....then they play for the "golden point".
Nah you probably said it right. Im starting to lose it, I think. Old age, Heat, A terrible Eels season. I dont know. I need some footy back in my life, I think.
Pops you're a real punish... We get what you're saying no need to carry on like you've figured out the solution to the Riemann hypothesis...
Yeah this topics been done on here 3 or 4 times a year since it was introduced. Facts are that 9 out of 213 games went to golden point in 2024. None were a finals match. Guess how many finals matches have been won with the golden shower process in the last 20+ years .... it's literally almost fuck all . Can count on one hand.
In saying that I think that extra time should be extra time. If they kick a field goal who cares the time should go on , if it's still a draw , then it's a draw. Still exciting. But meh , don't give a shit if they leave it . It's not like it's a common occurrence.
Agree, like idea of extra time - in reality it's no big deal.
Of course you do you sychophantic little prick!
