Part of the Formula For a Successful Season

Having completed a bit of research into the top 5 and the bottom 5 teams, I thought it would be interesting to present the following facts:Cowboys - 27 players used, 9 for 6 games or less - core group of 18 playersBroncos - 28 players used, 8 for 6 games or less - core group of 20 playersRoosters - 24 players used, 6 players for 6 games or less - core group of 18 playersSouths - 24 players used, 3 players for 6 games or less - core group of 21 playersSharks - 25 players used, 5 players for 6 games or less - core group of 20 playersNow look at these numbers:Parra - 29 players used, 6 players for 6 games or less - core group of 23 playersPenrith - 30 players used, 9 players for 6 games or less - core group of 21 NB May be misleading due to such high numbers of playersTigers - 25 players used, 4 players for 6 games or less - core group of 21 (indication of poor roster?)Titans - 31 players used, 11 players for 6 games or less - core group of 20 May also be misleading due to such high numbersKnights - 30 players used, 11 players for 6 games or less - again core group of 19 misleading due to such high numbers. In simple terms there is a stark difference between the number of players required by the teams at the top of the table compared to teams at the bottom.Teams at the top of the table have required few players outside of their best 17. In fact the additional players were mainly required during the Origin series!Look at the Roosters. Only 24 players used, with only 6 players needed for 6 games or less. Minimal injury impact. They are literally trotting out their top 17 every week. How fortunate is that?!?At the other end, trying to determine a core group for teams like Penrith, Newcastle and the Titans becomes statistically difficult given the massive numbers of different players they have used. It indicates constantly changing line ups.As for Parra, having such a high number of players required for more than 6 games indicates how regularly we have been required to use players outside the top 17.The damning statistic is probably faced by the Tigers who have used few players and have kept their halves and fullback on the field for most of the year.Of course, numbers don't tell the story of what players are missing - imagine the Cowboys without Thurston! However, the numbers do tell the story of table position. Ultimately, the Premiership will likely be decided by which of the top teams are least affected by injuries during the last rounds and the Finals series.

  • Injuries are twice as likely when players are fatigued. The more defence a team does the more fatigued they will get. Giving penalties away and dropping balls increases the amount of defence a team has to do, increases fatigue levels which increases the likelihood of injury.

  • Thanks good blog, too much spare time? Just kidding, add Losing Hayne pre season and Sandow at the tail end the jnr Paulo suspension and not to mention Hoppa being a disaster at fullback we have been well and truly arse farked this season.
    • Too much time to spare is an accurate call, lol!
I'm not using this blog as an excuse for Parra. I'm actually trying to point out the gulf that exists between the top and bottom placed teams in terms of players used. It allows these top placed teams, who are already blessed with quality players, to build momentum, combinations and confidence through being able to use a largely unchanged line up on a regular basis.
A team such as the Sharks, who are not blessed with as many "star" players, are a team benefitting from such "luck". One wonders where they would be sitting on the table if they were forced to field around 30 different players.
Manly' improved performance directly relate to returning their roster to close on full strength. Earlier in the year, they were cruelled by injury. Whether it's too late for them remains to be seen.
  • I have also wondered about the types of injuries. Bad luck, predisposition, fatigue. It's been a range of injuries for Parra this year., from fractures to joints and muscle injuries. There are also many Wenty players out injured that has placed a strain on the entire club.
  • Nice blog and top reading as usual sixtiesboy. On a side note the suspension of Junior really hurt us and taking BA so long to realise Seffa was crap cost us as well and I reckon the other players are feeling better knowing they aren't going to keep coping more hospital pass from him.

    • Every club makes errors with players. I've never been a huge rap on the way Seffa plays. He plays before the line way too often. I saw him as an average first grader, but this year his form has badly deteriorated.
  • With the respect to your stats, but I think the key to success is depth. If you look at some of the teams below us, they have been riddled with injuries and most of them have had to play players in different positions. Take knights for example, they played a second rower in the centres due to lack of players/depth.
    • Like playing a second rower as our five eight because we weren't allowed to use Henry? Look at the Wyong players listed to play. Imagine the Roosters having to use these players on a regular basis.
    • The detail behind the numbers will most likely reveal even bigger disparity when considering those in the core group playing out of position.  We had 5 wingers and a back rower in our line-up against the Titans. We had another game where our halfback sulked and decided he didn't want to play.

  • I've got my excuse...

Think it was worse for a new team whose previous game plan was centred around a superstar like ours was, suffering so many early in the season injury and suspensions, and the others like Taka were walking wounded.

What about the game we played with two second rowers in the centres?

Was thinking right from the start of the year being behind the eight ball was extra hard for a team with quite a few newbbies and combos to be sorted etc and our early injuries and major suspension found it extra hard to get some momentum

Would have made it easier for a few of the young ones coming up to just slot into a team with their major structures and game plans in place, classic example Manly and unlike us.

P.s Why would anyone not expect manly to perform well given they have 2.5M worth of halves,or miracle men? They have a backline combo amongst the best in the business who have been together for years, if when injury befalls one of those regulars whilst its a big loss, still shouldn't be too hard for another to step in and to know the firmly entrenched game plan

    Next year no excuses!
