BRONCOS bullies Adam Blair and Josh McGuire are expected to target Parramatta’s Kenny Edwards as payback for his late shot on Jonus Pearson when the competition heavyweights clash at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.
Victory will put the Eels in sight of a top-four finish, while the Broncos are pushing to hold on to second-place and a home final.
The Eels were unhappy at a series of incidents in their 28-14 win over the Broncos in round 21.
Eels centre Michael Jennings hit out at Blair for his “low” act of attacking his legs in a tackle that missed and instead took out his own teammate Andrew McCullough, causing a season-ending knee injury.
Blair also went unpunished for smashing Eels halfback Mitchell Moses with a late shoulder.
And firebrand McGuire came under fire for treading on Eels skipper Tim Mannah’s ankle while he was held on the ground late in the game.
But Edwards caught the attention of the Broncos after launching himself into Pearson as he laid on the ground.
The Eels will unleash the confrontational Edwards in the back row where he’s expected to play the full 80 minutes in place of the suspended Manu Ma’u.
Former Broncos favourite Justin Hodges expects Edwards to come under fire.
“It’s been a few weeks since it’s happened, but normally when those incidents happen, you don’t forget about it and it’s always in the back of your mind,’’ Hodges told The Daily Telegraph.
“If he does it again it will ignite the boys. Guys like Blairy and Josh McGuire will have it in the back of their minds, for sure, and I’m sure if they get a chance they’ll get a good hit on him.
“There’s always a little extra stick when they know one of their teammates was hit pretty late last time.
“If Kenny had his time over I’m sure he wouldn’t have done it. It was a bit of a brain explosion.’’
Bennett was not happy with Edwards’ tackle on Pearson, describing it at the time as “not the look the game wants”, while skipper Darius Boyd said “it is pretty scary if someone is concussed and someone comes down to tackle him or hit him again.’’
Parramatta coach Brad Arthur was not buying into Edwards hype, and instead praised the backrower for getting himself into shape to punch out 80 minutes when required.
“It’s a game of footy. It’s a big occasion, second versus fifth, we’re going to Brisbane, there should be a big crowd, and these are the games the boys want to play in, regardless of what happened last time,’’ Arthur told The Daily Telegraph.
“A big thing for Kenny at the start of the pre-season was getting himself into the position to play 80 minutes if we needed him to, he’s done a good job coming off the bench with his impact, but there have been occasions we’ve needed that 80-minute performance, and he’s done it well.
“We know we’re playing finals football, now it’s about finetuning our game, we just can’t flick the switch when we get there, we want to be making sure we’re trying to play our best footy leading into the finals.’’
Kaysa Pritchard (knee) and Beau Scott (bicep) were both named in the extended squad but won’t play, while Arthur praised the rise of halves Corey Norman and Mitchell Moses.
“They’re getting better every week, their combination is getting stronger, they’re sharing the kicking, which makes us more of a threat there,’’ Arthur said.
“I think we’re getting better at controlling games. The balance between when to play and when not to play, when to kick and to run, the options they’re taking have been very good.’’
