Parramatta - it's Personal

I was touched by the blog about Karl's passing and thought about how Parramatta was such a special part of his life. I thought that this blog could be a way of asking people about what makes Parramatta more than just a club to cheer for and why you dedicate the time that you do to following the Eels. Here's my personal connections:1. Family tradition. Dad followed Parra. I carried that tradition.2. Players who were real. Again the connection to my father. He worked with players and the great Keith Campbell bought Dad's truck. As a child I saw players in my house or at my father's workplace. What kid wouldn't be impacted by that?3. Local connection. I grew up walking distance to Parra. Even as an adult I still see players at local shops.4. The club has a heart. Over the years I've not just seen those organised visits to hospitals etc shown in the media, I've witnessed players share their time with "special" people.5. Parra has always been a point of difference. As a kid it would have been easier to follow Souths, Manly or St George. I followed the team that was always near the bottom of the table. That's not why I followed them but it sure made it so special when the good years came! It still does. There you have it. My top 5 and no on-field reasons there. I'd like to add one final comment about Steve Sharp. This bloke has a certain embodiment of those 5 reasons about him. He's always stopped to earnestly talk Parramatta with me whenever I've spoken to him. He speaks to you in a way that makes you feel like a mate having a yarn. As the bloke in charge, he's helping to keep my supporter flame burning.Over to you. What connects you to the Eels?

  • I actually had a similar conversation with my father inlaw last night, and couldn't come up with a definitive answer. I moved to Sydney in 83, and lived on the edge of Magpies, Eels and Panthers territory so could have gone either way. None of my mates went for Parra, so the only reason I could see is that the Eels were winning at the time. I am glad I made the choice as a 7 year old and even though most of my mates would bag me during the years following the 86 win, I have always been a proud supporter of the B&G and wouldn't change it for the world!
  • Mum, dad, 3 brothers + myself, 4 sisters & my two boys who go for parra its a family thing apart for one brother who goes for Canberra (don't know whats wrong with him). All very proud Parramatta supporters doesn't matter if we are first or last never eve had a problem showing our true colours B&G.
I remember when I was 10 my father told me that we were going Peter wynns for my birthday he got me a Jersey and took me to the game. May not sound like a big thing but it's a memory will stick with me forever.
The pride, the passion, the memories, the heart, that adrenil rush you get during the game.
  • Probably like you, mainly for off field reasons. I don't know why but I wanted to see the Thornett's play when I was very young. Many people I have spoken with have said that was also the reason they started following Parramatta. Dad followed Wests at the time but quickly converted due to the camaraderie at Cumberland Oval games. We are all social animals and finding a great social environment feels comfortable. We were all lucky growing up around Cumberland Oval that everything seem to come together, except success on the field. Can you imagine youngsters these days following a team that got the spoon most years? Meeting supporters and players who had no egos but were genuine people who enjoyed a laugh was probably the major factor. People now are ego driven and it seems that truly vicious people have been appointed to run areas of Government/committees which means only like people get promoted leaving us with a vicious society. Steve Sharp is a great bloke with no ego and you can feel that "Cumberland Oval" feel coming back to the club

  • It's a funny thing with Dad. He got me started in following the Eels but by the mid 70s he'd grown tired of the lean years. I started to go to games without my parents. When things began to change for the Eels in 75, my excitement about them winning brought both he and my mum back to the game. In fact my mum became fanatical and superstitious at games. If she was looking at a player through binoculars at a game and Parra scored, she would keep the binoculars to her eyes for the rest of the game! Mum and Dad eventually became season ticket holders from 1986 to 2004. I guess I repaid Dad the favour.
  • Noona, tell him he's a very lucky man for me and and that he betta keep on his toes, he never knows, there could be a 20 year old young buck checking out his turf and keen on his Lady..

  • My old man took me to sit on the hill in either 74/75 when I was 2 or 3.Back in those days money was that tight we waited until the gates were opened and would go in and watch the 2nd half.

Then in 76 & 77 he worked for one of the banks in the local area and I remember going in to help him decorate the branch before the Grand Final.I was an Eel for life from then on
