Parramatta Eels - An Important Aspect to Address For 2016

As the season is analysed by our football department, there is an important statistic that cannot be ignored - the penalty count. Whether this statistic relates to our discipline or the referee's perception of the team is debatable. Maybe it's a combination of both.Here's the basic numbers:Games played - 24Penalty counts won - 6Penalty counts lost - 16Penalty counts drawn - 2The numbers in the above make for interesting examination.The winning penalty count differences were as follows - +1, + 1, +1, + 1, + 2, + 8Apart from one massive advantage (our win over the Tigers), there was very little advantage in these counts. Essentially, four of those won penalty counts were actually close to drawn counts.Now let's look at the differences in the losing counts - -1, -1, -2, -2, -2, -2, -3, -3, -3, -3, -4, -4, -5, -5, -5, -6.The possession advantage in these numbers is obvious.So what's going on? Are we a very ill-disciplined team? The greatest critics of our season would say that we are. If we are losing games we must be making the type of mistakes that result in such penalty counts. That would seem to be a fair enough statement.So let's look at our wins. In our 9 wins, we only won the penalty count on 2 occasions. Is this some sort of anomaly? If we are the better performing team in the match, should we not expect a lower penalty count against us? Following the poorly performing, ill-disciplined team theory, Parramatta were full of errors, lost the penalty counts in these matches, and still found a way to win. Incredibly, the counts against us in those winning matches contained some of the worst differentials in our losing counts.I'm not going to pretend to have a magical answer. Obviously becoming a team who wins more matches may make us a better respected team. However, I'm sure that the football department will have more statistics that detail the types of penalties awarded against us and may use such data as part of our preparation for next year.Wearing my Parramatta coloured glasses, my gut reaction watching live told me that we were penalised for the types of indiscretions that other teams were not held accountable for. In other words, whilst penalties against Parramatta may have been deserved, penalties to us were not awarded when they should have been.Similarly, key decisions (ie the knock on call against Morgan in the Raiders game) do not appear as a statistic.Regardless of the reasons, and my own personal view of referees, it is an aspect of Parramatta's performance that must be addressed next season. In my opinion, it was a huge hurdle in 2015.FootnoteMany thanks to Forty20 for keeping and providing these statistics.   • Honestly if a ref makes a mistake every so often but is consistent i'm happy, but inconsistency is not acceptable. Like i said though human error every so often is fair enough if the systems are less robotic. Too bad they use more technology and make more errors lol.
  • The statistics indicate that range of referees take issue with our game. As I stated, it's worth investigating what we can do to address it.
    My biased eye still sees our stupid penalties, which for mine are the marker being caught offside or a blatant strip. But apart from those, I've seen real head scratching decisions going against us. Perhaps there is a pattern of penalty types that can be detected and rectified.
    • 60s - if you want to see some "real head scratchers" just replay this weekends Finals series games.

      3rd rate refereeing at its worst in ALL games.

      Gavin Badger was by far the BEST referee over the weekend and he did pull 3 doozies that I can recall, surprisingly (NOT) all in favour of the Bronx.

  • 60s theres no doubt that we have shown plenty of poor discipline over the season, lazy silly penalties, even blokes like gower who was outstanding last year and up until he had the compound fracture in the finger this year had a poor second half of the season, his discipline was not up to scratch.

    Now combine that with the same sort of stuff from Moeroa, Pauli, Choc gave plenty away same with junior and Lussick, Kelly, Norman they all give plenty of penalties away and BA needs to get it out of their game.

    We received plenty of poor calls from the refs this year but imo thats no excuse for our poor discipline.

    Ive got a theory that plenty of it is a knock on effect from lacking confidence as a team,  imo confidence is the key to good synergy on the park, Foz will bring plenty of that.

    • I reckon it's ref prejudice against Parramatta actually, much more than ill discipline from our boys. I justify this by noting that other teams perform the same indiscretions as us but don't get penalised for them, for example, our line speed was outstanding on many occasions and we get penalised for offside, but other teams ARE offside and they DON'T get penalised. So I say this screams of viewer bias or prejudice.

    • But that's a tactic they use to slow the play down. Whenever they are in trouble they purposely give away a penalty, to bring play and momentum to a stop, and back their defence to hold you out. Why wouldn't you back your own defence when you have a team choc full of internationals.

    • I remember before we played the chooks & I was thinking at least we should win a penalty count today, because of there bad track record, but sure enough from memory we supposedly were the ill disciplined team & they were angels for a change.
  • We have had a number of different coaches over the years who have tried to address this problem. They worked with the refs and consulted with the NRL on how to better stay within the rules, and they did exactly what the refs told them to, but the same stat pops up for the eels year after year. We've also had a number of different players over the years so it cant be the same old offenders every week of every year.  So is it the coaches, players or referees that are the problem here? Surly out of all the coaches we've had at least one of them would have been able to fix this problem so that being said I say the refs are the problem.

    • The penalty count in that match was one of the worst against us, 10 to 5. It included very significant calls, including a Roosters penalty for a lost possession on half way, which was a lost possession not a strip. It brought the play into the Parra quarter for the JWH try.
  • Correct me if I am wrong Sixties, but in pre season training blogs I thought I remembered you saying we had refs at training., so we could work on rule interpretations, that didn't seem to help, were giving them a hard time at training or something or did they just get a good look at how we were going to try to take an advantage through some type of deception. I don't this has baffled me all year & I have gone through all sorts of conspiracy theories this season. One of my theories is maybe Daniel Anderson has seemed to upset a lot of people over the years, maybe when he was referee's boss he just pissed them all off so much
