Our depth in 2016 is refreshing!

Hey guys,

First time blogger here. I've been following this site for a few years but only just started posting this season. Been an Eels fan for around 20 years!

How refreshing is our depth this year? Particularly in the forwards. Of course nobody wants to see players injured or suspended but I think from players 8 through to 17 if we get short term injuries (which is a given) it wont hurt us too much. With the likes of De-Gois, Gower, Alvaro, Tanginoa and Terepo all outside our strongest 17, they can all step in and do a job and at the same time they all gain valuable first grade experience and also put pressure on the first choice team to hold down their spots when they return!

Sadly we don't have the same depth with our outside backs or our halves. Like they have been doing with Foran, I hope the training and development staff realise this and can manage their training regimes to minimse the likelihood of injuries. I also hope that next time we need a half to step in, Cornish gets the nod over Kelly! Last year I was baffled with Joseph Paulo getting picked every week, this year BA sees to be getting the selection right thus far, except for Kelly!

  • 11 of our Wenty 17 have decent first grade experience.

    Faraimo
    Morgs
    Toutai
    Kelly
    Cornish
    O'Brien
    King
    Alvaro
    Kelepi
    Nelson
    Hasson

Plus our 1st grade 17 we also have

    Terepo (18th man)
    Peats (injured)
    Watmough (possible retirement)
    Folau (injured ?)

Anyone else I may have missed in RM.

Plenty of depth across the park
    • 32 players - with Moss, French, Twal and Fuimaono looking good enough to be called up if disaster strikes.
    • Hence why our Wenty team is doing so well this season!

However if Morgan and Toutai for example needed to replace Jenko and Semi (or Gutherson and Taka) I think it presents a weakness in our team. They are solid players but they will certainly be targeted heavily by opposition.

Our forward replacements on the other hand are rock solid and we certainly don't lose any grunt in the pack!

    • Just about to post exactly that supereel. Nobody can come into jenko and semi's boots
  • That's generally what happens with backup players, they're not as good as your first string players.
    • I realise that but it's exciting to think that our replacement forwards are as good as our first string players IMO.

  • Beven French had a blinder in the NYC scoring 3 tries
    • He's an exciting young prospect! Do you think his defence is up to first grade standard? I haven't seen much of NYC.

    • He's attack is very good, but he's defence is pretty average, he needs to bulk up a bit.
He may get a shot in first grade if we get a lot of injuries
  • No way near it
