NRL's DOUBLE STANDARDS

In view of the NRL's stance against the Storm's salary Cap rort the NRL are applying double standards to the game in general. They have sufficient evidence to strip the Storm of all recognition for the past four years but continue to promote the guilty players as acceptable representatives of the game. The players in question are the first selected for representative honours on both State and National teams and paraded as shining examples of top flight sportsmen in the game.If the NRL is to be seen to have any morals or ethics regarding the blatant cheating by these players they should have been banned from any / all involvement in NRL representaive fixtures for at least as long as the Storm are to be penalised for their involvement in this fiasco. All State representaive fixtures that these players have been invloved in over the past four years should also be declared null and void and the teams in which they played have their wins and trophies cancelled. On an International basis this could also leave other countries in a position to call "foul" for any wins we may have achieved with these players in our squad. To penalise the team they play for, but continue to promote the known cheats as as heros of the game is the most blatant application of double standards the NRL will ever be guilty of.Perhaps to ban these cheats from representative games for the same period of time that they have been rorting the game would be a suitable punishment.Am I being too harsh?

  • You have a major administrative problem here - namely, the NRL governs the clubs and club competition whilst the ARL governs the State and international competitions. The ARL is answerable in part to the NRL board but the problem is you've got directors of the ARL who are also directors of the NRL so the NRL will never call the ARL on it's shit!

This is why there was no real objection at board level to the selection of Israel Folau for Qld despite the fact you can bet David Gallop wouldn't have thought it was a good idea at all!

I don't think that the players cheating at the club level should impact administratively at rep level, however, I would say that by allowing the Storm to operate with an illegal roster of core players that comprise the Qld squad, they have fostered an environment where those key players are at unfair advantage in SOO and our players at a competitive disadvantage. Add to the fact that Qld blatantly ignored the eligibility rules and chose a NSWelshman in Greg Inglis and in my book, everything Qld achieved re their 5 series wins in a row is tarnished beyond repair.

I don't give a fuck what those toads think - every win they've had since selecting Inglis and since the salary cap breaches began at the Storm, in mine and many fans' eyes, are as hollow as the Storm's 'premierships' in 2007 and 2009.
  • OK BM won't give you too much argument in what you say - However

If the ARL are in charge of rep selection criteria then why could they NOT stop Folau's selection for the maroons.
I do not understand why you say "there was no real objection at board level" when the head of the ARL was on tv saying it was the ARL's stance that Folau should not be selected and the Qrl told him to go and get screwed.
If they are the governing body then they must have the power to intervene or veto incorrect state decisions

And again if the NRL see fit to penalise a club for cheating, how is it that the ARL sit on their hands regarding State and National cheats?

Either way you look at it somewhere along the chain of command some section of RL must stand up and take responsibilty for the control of cheats - and it is not happening.
Much to the detriment of the game as a whole.

In any other pro sport these cheats would have been suspended, fined or simply kicked out.

We have ARL, NRL, NSWRL & QRL all condoning what these cheats are doing and being part of teams in which they have no right to be playing in.

A cheat by any other name is still a sleazy little man syndrome CHEAT and have no place in the game at all.
    • Completely agree that we have 'too many chiefs' at the moment. The various boards weren't condoning it - even Ross Livermore of the QRL didn't want to see Folau selected, however, the Qld players lobbied their coach to pressure the board to let him play.

Now those Qld players and Mal have a pretty big sway on the board and while the NSWRL might have blocked the move, it was probably considered to be too fractious a strategy to create such a conflict at board level and create even more free publicity for the AFL.

I think as Tommyboy says below, the sooner we have an Independent Commission, the less likely we'll ever see this sort of sorry tale play out again!
  • This is why we need an independent governing body that has the final say on the running of the game.

The system in place at the moment, does not and cannot work fairly as there is too many fingers in the pie.

one ship one captain, otherwise we have a mutiny on the bounty.
  • It hasn't been confirmed officially that players knew about the breaches so I don't see a double standard.

Can't see why you would strip QLD of any titles.
    • I agree until any players are proven to be complicit in the cap rort there is no reason to exclude or punish those players.
But the fact that the cap rort has given a distinct advantage by allowing so many superstars to play together in the one team that represent qld, both now and in the past' is just infuriating for a blues man like myself.
    • Also, there were a few Melbourne players playing for the Blues so they should, by tgis theory, be disqualified too. I think it is just best left as is.
  • Morgs 82 & YDIDISAYIDO _ I fail to see how players did not know they were being paid overs.

If they sign a contract with the Storm for say $350 large but receive into their bank account 500 large are you trying to tell me they would not know that something is just a little bit out of balance?

OK so I am totally pissed about losing 5-0 but that does not say the governing bodies are not applying double standards by allowing the players into rep teams. The ARL or NRL has to do something about it.

Guilt is determined by involvement - so the players by accepting over their contracted income are complicit by NOT questioning where the money is coming from. By accepting the money they are guilty of salary cap cheating.

The NRL have told the Storm to pay back something like $1.7 mill in excess payments to players - they didn't pick this figure out of the air they audited the books to ascertain this figure. The NRL also have specific players they are investigating.

If the club is to be penalised then the players involved must also be penalised but this is not happening. They are still being put up as shining examples of RL which is WRONG - WRONG - WRONG.

Todays Courier Mail carried a story on Ryan James - the young 18 yo forward at the Titans going the same way as Inglis
Born in NSW - played U17's for NSW but it looks like he will end up in a maroon jersey.

SOO is a joke as long as NSW guys are poached into the Qld team and a bigger joke when salary cap cheats are allowed to play in rep .
    There are your double standards.
    • Forget all that - it has been proven that Cameron Smith signed three contracts.

I am sorry, but even a man with the brainpower of a small flea knows that when you enter into a negotiation or an agreement with another party - YOU SIGN ONE CONTRACT.

Even if Cameron Smith has less brainpower than a small flea, he MUST have realised something was wrong. You simply do not sign three contracts. And this inkling that something was wrong and not doing anything more about it is enough to constitute recklessness.
      • It constitutes guilt TB not recklessness.

As you point out - 3 contracts signed and acceptance of over payments.
At the very least it is conspiracy to defraud I would think
The acceptance of the money is the crime.

IMO just about all the comments so far reinforce my point of the double standards being applied regardless of who is resposible for outing these cheats.

Pie in the sky "independent" governing body may be part of the answer but as yet it has not happened - so who picks up the cleaners job in the mean time?

Makes me wonder if I shouldn't defect to supporting a sport with ethics - like blind man's bluff
