Nrl rule changes for 2023

The RitalinKids at NRL HQ, those entrusted with the stewardship of our game, have shown too many times that they cannot be trusted with it.

They do not have "good football" at heart. They have" entertainment product" at heart. They are desperate to appeal to those who currently have no interest in RL, like the loser kid at school who, like,  just wants to be cool, but does not have the slightest idea what it is, let alone how to achieve it. They want to improve fiddle with everything, so some of their toys need to be taken off them. Lets take The Rulebook, and The Systems used to apply said rules, out of their cot.

They seem to be great at business ( god knows that the game needs business acumen at the top), but, like 16yr olds, they just cant help fucking about with things that they have no real idea about. Like the rules and rule systems that control the flow and tempo of our game.

They make Good Changes (for ...reasons), tell us that they made things "better", (whatever that means),congratulate themselves, then don't look back or accept criticism. It's their legacy, and they are good, they know what is good for us, so they must have done Good. And they can show how carelessly flippant "busy" they have been. Productivity++. Smashed the KPI's they set for themselves.

Progress is always good to these glad-handing Know-it alls. Things always move Forward, they always make it better, and those who dissent are haters or "Just don't understand".... Those cheeky, deluded narcissists.... We Understand... that if they admitted to causing regression with their deleterious decisions , to making Rugby League The Product worse, they would be admitting they have done a shit job and are shit at it, so they're not going to do that. All's well, Best Season Ever.  Its Bullshit, as all posters to 1ee (all the ones I respect anyway) well know. As far as these Leaders managers are concerned, our job is to consume their product and shut the fuck up.

They have tin ears and adhd. They have Distorted vision and motives, twisted by vested intrests.

We just wanna see good footy. Many folks no longer know what that consists of, but a few posters on here do. (Tele1 made me realize this again.kudos)

Sooo...The Good Folk of 1EE are as qualified as anyone(more than most) to offer fixes, to put out The DumpsterFire RL is becoming
Question:   What rule/rule system change would you make or scrap for 2023 and why do you think it would help.
(note:Do not suggest scrapping 6 again bell for first 3 tackles as this is too obvious. A penalty is fair. If you haven't noticed that this is screwing our game, well, there just is no helping you, and I don't care much for your thoughts)

  • I'll Start...Knock ons and forward passes.

Tele1 really got me thinking on this. It is such a no=brainer to me. We have the technology to track the ball in real time. Chip the ball, chip the players (exactly where is tricky I suggest either the wrists under the strapping or around their waist.) Then scan the park with sensors so as to "microgrid" it( not as hard as it sounds).

Knock-on's should return to being Real Knock-ons, ie the ball actually travels Forward as opposed to being going backward or nowhere

Knock ons must also touch the ground. If you bobble into an opposition player and get it back good on you, play on
Forward passes are harder as the rule is "backwards out of the hands" becauseif a man running at 37 k's an hour passes and stops straight away, has the ball still going forward at a fair clip, and may even overtake him.... So fuck backward out of the hands.

The ball must be caught in a position behind the person who threw the pass.

When either a real knock on or forward pass occur, a buzzer goes off in the Refs ear, and the knock on or Forward pass is called.
This will not only remove some fear of error from attacking play but it will take a couple of things off the referees plate. Fathead made clear to me in one of his posts that refs are impossibly overloaded .
It may even be useful for policing the 10 mtrs
To help pay for it get rid of the touch judge's. They do nothing 'cept get ignored anyway. In fact I don't care how they pay for it they, found enough money for the bunker, and its  corrupt or fucked.
    • Okay, the problem with the whole "stick a chip in the ball" is that it's not as simple as that. Technology hasn't advanced that far to track a ball with the accuracy required across a football pitch. The way the chip is used in soccer is much more simple. The stadiums using the tech have a bunch of specialised cameras at either end of the pitch focussed on the goal line between the goal posts to judge if the ball has fully crossed the line.

You can't ignore physics for a forward pass. You're an idiot if you think saying a ball must be caught in a position behind the person who threw the pass is a simple solution. It's not, because then you literally couldn't have players running and passing at the line. And what happens if, after the pass, the ball player steps backwards and end up behind the receiver? Is that pass now forward?

There's nothing wrong with the knock on rule. If you can't control the ball and it hits an opponent, it is a knock-on. You can't be using an opponent to help you keep control of the ball.

These rule changes are literally worse than anything the NRL has implemented in the last two seasons.

      • I accept my changes may be worse, but...

I call BS on the tech can't do it. As i stated, the players must be chipped. This can be done, no shit super. ( maybe not for 10m) Forward pass calls are terrible atm. I never suggested ignoring physics, i suggested make them go back. Alternatively, set a limit on how far forward it cvan go. At the mo, calls are random and it's all on 1 v.busy and distracted ref.

If i bobble the ball into an opponent, and he doesn't want it enough to take it imo, if i regain control without it hitting the ground, play on. Isn't this as it used to be?

I don't doubt that I am off the mark with these, but wow, I'm sick of this rule creep and the reffereeing is a disgrace.

        • I didn't say you can't stick a chip in the ball. That's already being done. But it's one thing to stick a chip in the ball, it's another thing to have the technology to utilise it.

For instance, where do we put the chip on the ball? If you put it on either end then you're at risk for inaccurate readings depending on how the ball is thrown. The NFL has been looking at this for years and they haven't got a use case for it and they have billions upon billions to play with.

Also, for an indication of how much this could cost the NRL, Major League Soccer turned down goal line technology because it would cost $3,900 per game just for their goal line technology plus $260,000 to fit out each stadium with the tech. To transfer that to the NRL, it would cost $783,900 every season just for per game tracking plus $3,900,000 to fit out every stadium.

And that's a very simple use case. It's tracking the position of the ball in relation to a stationary line and object. What you're suggesting is to track the position of the ball in relation to a number of moving objects across 7,000 square metres.

          • In the scheme of things that's chicken feed to have a more enjoyable game. What's the cost of the bad publicity, the conspiracy theories , the referees turning  away from the game due to the pressure of Monday morning risk of being front page of the papers and social media bagging , and ultimately fans getting the shits and switching off.  I'd say it's an amount certainly worth more consideration.

Then what other possibilities can this tech bring to the game ? Tracking could lead to seling the data  to media outlets and clubs.

            • Wiz, it'd be more expensive than the goal line technology because it would be a lot more complicated. And it says something that the MLS turned it down due to cost when the average MLS club is worth US$550m.

It's so expensive to run that only the top European competitions and FIFA run international tournaments use it.

              • The value to them may be substantially differing to the value of the technology to the NRL mate.  As I said it is not unworthy of the suggestion , nor would it be unworthy of the NRL considering it as their shit calls are ruining the game day experience for their fans.  Every year it's getting worse.

let's assume for arguments sake there's what maybe 1 instance every what 10 games wheras the soccer ball crossing the goal line is questionable ? Would that be fair ? I'd say from my 40 years watching the  game yeah .  It's probably more like 20 games to be fair.

wheras in the NRL this tech would be utilised up to about 10 times a game. Fair call ?  Probably every set if Henry P's in charge.

what value can you put on the clarity of the dubious calls. Imagine a single weekend wheras the games not spoken negativity on Monday morning due to refereeing calls.

          • Knock ons are tracked to the player that knocked on. What part of of the ball does the ref go off?

          • Rfid film over /around whole bladder should do it. You shouldn't say can''t. less than 10yrs ago rockets could not land, even on land let alone on an ocean moving barge. Technology changes quickly

      • Seriously, I have a proven soloution for foward passes. Allow passes to be foward, it is a fact that foward passes would make the game better.

History has proven this with NFL where it itself struggled with this very same issue and the game was average  - like NRL - until NFL allowed foward passes. It is the acceptance of foward passes that allowed NFL to become the sporting product it is today
