NRL bunker under fire for no-try ruling

The NRL’s $2 million bunker is again under fire for a controversial no-try ruling against Brad Takairangi in Parramatta’s 22-10 win over Manly. The Eels were left scratching their heads and social media went into meltdown on Thursday night after Takairangi was ruled to be offside after collecting a Corey Norman grubber and planting it on the line in the 47th minute at Brookvale Oval. While the decision ultimately had no bearing on the result, with the Eels piling on three late tries, the game was in the balance at 8-8 at the time and could have turned the match. The video referees found insufficient evidence to overturn the on-field ruling of no try, even though replays appeared to show Takairangi to be behind the kicker, with Eels coach Brad Arthur voicing his displeasure. “I thought he was onside,” Arthur said.appParramatta skipper Corey Norman said it was a clear try, adding to mounting criticism of the bunker. “I sort of questioned one of the refs about it. ’I’m sure one of his feet were behind the line’ and he sort of said to me ’both feet have to be behind the line’,” Norman told Sky Sports Radio on Friday.“But watching the replay, I think you can clearly see that both feet were behind Norman. It wasn’t as if it was touch and go. I think you could clearly see that he’s onside. So I don’t know how they couldn’t pick it up.”Last month, the Sydney Roosters were left seething when a dubious offside decision cost them dearly in their round-four defeat to the Sea Eagles. In the dying minutes, Mitchell Aubusson was ruled offside in the lead-up to Latrell Mitchell crossing the line. While the Roosters could not hide their displeasure at the ruling, NRL referees boss Tony Archer later backed his men because he said the bunker did not have sufficient evidence to overrule the on-field decision. The bunker, the NRL’s centralised video refereeing unit which is based on models used in American sports, was introduced this year with much fanfare. Fans were at first promised a zero per cent error rate by now NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg however it has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks.

  • Such a bad call
  • Clearly a dubious call. How Archer claims insufficient evidence is an absolute joke.
If that's insufficient evidence, the bunker should never rule on an onside ruling ever again
    • It's obvious archer will back his officials chief!!! I must say the referees are like magistrates.....untouchable!!! All wrong decisions are right and their correct decisions are justification for it!!!
    • If the bunker can't make calls on forward passes then how can they make calls on offsides is what I want to know. Both are subject to camera angles yet somehow the nrl seems to think one is possible to rule on but the other isn't. Really strange thinking.
    • Same with obstruction ruling on Semi, he turned Moanly player inside out and there was no obstruction. Also earlier obstruction ruling against Parra ruled because Parra player run behind own player. However with Moanly no try they also run behind own players but that was not even considered. WTF!

  • Its a try unless you're a manly fan and then clearly he was offside. Also if you're a manly fan taka touched the ball and knocked on for one of the other tries. Also manly were the better team and everyone else is wrong lol
    • But if you are not a Manly fan, all other fans know they are a filthy club.

    • Taka dos touch the ball in the lead up to jennings' first try.....no doubt!!! But, the ball went back and bounced forward......simple play on!!! No questions asked!! Fair try!!! Bad luck Moanly and that pathetic whinged Lyon!! As a side note love how Radradra made Lyon look like a school boy footballer last night, especially with the last try!!!
    • Does!! Sorry stupid phone!
  • Thought I was gonna blow a fuse last night.
Didn't see the touchies flag go up at all either who was in line.

The Jennings smack around the chips was accidental? but how wouldn't he be awarded a penalty for that was mystifying.
Like Gaz's comment that he thought the hit in Jennings was no different to peats on Matai

'Semi run around the back' disallowed try was applying the law too stringently, there was nobody there to impede haha. Still that's the rule however, where was the consistency with think Stewart running around the back of two for the lusaick no try? They didn't even question.

Just so proud the team maintained their discipline and win out in the end, coz after everything a loss in the circumstances would've been gut wrenching to all.
