Parramatta have reportedly signed Kurt Fisher from Mackay Cutters in the NQ Cowboys system. He stands at 198cm tall and 100kg, is a Centre who could move into the back-row. He took inspiration from cousin Ben Smith, now will be playing for the team that Smith himself played over 150 NRL games for. Fisher, 21 next November, hails from Gunnedah NSW. He is another player brought in with ability to be flexible. He ran the fast 40 time ever recorded in the NQ system, so he has pace about him for his size. But he seems similar to Jordan Samrani in that both are tall Centre's who could be project back-rowers.
It seems Fisher is following the footsteps of William Latu, a back-rower poached from the NQ system also. Last time i remember us signing a player from Mackay Cutters was Andrew Davey, worked out alright for us in 2020. What i like about this signing is same with a few others, versitility. We are not pigeonholing ourselves and players into a set position or two and fitting them into a system. We let the players develop, as long as they are hard-working and fit the philosophy in attitude that's all that matters. But having Fisher come in, no guarentees even starting in NSW Cup, as a Centre who could play back-row is great for us. Instead of forcing the likes of Dan Keir to play Centre in Cup due to not having any options what so ever.

Yup, The Penguin - those were the days lol
Gus Gould giving him that stupid nickname of the penguin was the worst thing that could have happened to his early carreer I reckon. From 2005 until his injury before the finals in 2007 I reckon he was on the top 3 or 4 Centres in the game. He was a huge out for us in the 2007 finals series. Gus made him a bit of a joke with that nickname
I'm all for us signing depth players as our depth has been atrocious for years but that won't fix our first grade squads deficiencies.
That's where I disagree the first grade squad as walked into first grade for years no competition, this year there is multiple spots up for grabs there is youngsters in every postion wanting to make that spot theres, players need to put in every week and get better ir get left behind. Especially defensively in games it was well knwon BA didnt really drop players, but depth gives you that option and that desire and hunger to players, it should challenge the first grade squad and hopefully make them push harder then they have needed to for years
Have to agree OE.
Moreso in the backs than the forwards, though.
I hear you Freshie, but it seems the cupboard is "bare" given it appears Ryles did not want Tyrell. Thompson, don't know where he is at, seemingly dogs......Not much else left that you would call a differentiator?
It seems to me talking to non aligned league followers that nobody is quiet taking us seriously yet. This may include players we have been trying to obtain, but they are looking at what they perceive is a better opportunity of a club going forward. I get how the Dogs probably have the edge on us in this perception.
That said I think our middles are OK if they concentrate on defence and hitups. The edges are interesting because those younger ones we are picking up (we only need one to fire) and it could make a hell of a difference. Likewise if Joash Papillii ends up as a 14 (thinking Brad Drew), he could start cutting sides to ribbons.....maybe too early yet....but I retain my optimism.
Yes yes I know , I'll be the horrible cynic for daring not to blindly buy into the big fairytale ,but meh.
So if I'm correct you have this kid and Iongi ripping teams to shreds ? Youve been pumping the tyres up on our recruitment team again discreetly trying not to mention your mate MONs name this time around . They have 1 game of NRL between them . Ones a Penrith disgaurd , a club that's the pinicle of keeping the next talented superstar and tossing away their current superstars for cap reasons . And the other was released early from his contract by Phil Gould , the bloke many credit with building the Penrith juniors development program .
Whilst it'd be great to have somehow outsmarted these clubs and have managed to sneak two superstars primed to become great week in week out NRL game breakers like you're trying to have us believe , the reality is theyre both rookies who will most likely have massive deficiencies in their games and if one manages to see a season through playing more NRL games than not , we'll be doing very well.
That's a bit unfair Wiz. To call Iongi as discard is like calling Hopggod a discard. Both players were stuck behind the best in the game in their respective positions being Yeo and Edwards. Both players were and are ready to play NRL and there's plenty of reasons to be optimistic regarding Iongi. Jury is out on Papali for me.
Pops, my suspicion is Ryles "wanted" May but he went to the highest bidder.
The Dogs & Saints, who would've wanted a quality middle like May, seemed to exit the auction pretty quickly.
On the Bye Round, May admitted he went to the Tigers because they "really wanted" him after his bitterly, disillusioning Roosters' exit.
He said he felt unwanted for no good reason that was hidden from him and came out of the blue via a 2 min call from Robbo.
It's a strange one. If the issues aren't personal (as social media nefariously gossiped in its infinite wisdom), are the issues attitude related?
PS: Thomson would be ideal, but not sure we'll get him as he will probably need big coin. The thing is props are one of the highest paid positions, currently. Third-highest after halfback and fullback according to those NRL benchmark documents. I wonder if that'll change the way the game is evolving.
