Pretend referee Henry Perenara faced heavy criticism from commentators over two very ordinary incidents in Parramatta's scrappy victory over the Brocnco's on Friday night. Meanwhile, a third strange decision has received less attention.
Commentators and fans of both teams were first left scratching their heads after Junior Paulo became the first NRL player of the season to be penalised for failing to show a duty of care while tackling Bronco forward, David Fifita, too low around the legs for Perenara's liking. The penalty resulted in the Broncos being gifted field position, scoring a try soon after.
Later in the second half, Perenara again caused confusion for all when attempting to explain a decision which denied Blake Ferguson what would have been his first double of the season after a clever bat on from Gutherson. In contemplating his decision, King Henry considerd no less than a forward pass, a knock on, a no try referral to the Bunker, a captains challenge and a "...my mistake...", I'm clueless admission.
While these two incidents raised eyebrows, Perenara will have further explaining to do after he appeared to even the ledger, repaying the Eels by refusing to send halfback Mitchell Moses to the sin bin, despite his consistent and repeated acts of 'foul' play. Many fans and game experts will believe that Moses was indeed very lucky to remain on the field, rather than spending some time sidelined to reflect upon his multiple, careless 5th tackle indiscretions.
