EELS HALF SET TO TEST VALUE ON OPEN MARKET

Eels halfback Mitchell Moses is set to not activate a player option for 2022 and test his value on the open market.

Moses needs to activate his player option by Round 10 and Brent Read revealed on Triple M that he expects Moses not to meet that deadline.

“We mentioned the Broncos potentially having a go at him and it has been bubbling away and simmering at Parramatta for quite some time now,” Read said on Triple M Saturday Scrum.

“He has got an option that he has to take up by Round 10 and Parramatta initially offered him another year on top of that, which would have taken him through to the end of 2023.

“He basically sat on that offer, I don’t think his camp were overly happy with that offer. I believe they have subsequently come back with an offer for another year on top of that to take him through to the end of 2024.

“I have a feeling he won’t take it up. I don’t think he will take the offer, but whether or not he takes the option depends on what sort of offers he gets elsewhere.

“Cronulla are looking at him. Brisbane are looking at him. He has got that option in his back pocket. If he takes that up then he would be off-contract at the end of next year, which would make him an ideal guy for the new Brisbane franchise.

“He has three weeks to make a decision on the option. My feeling is he won’t take it. He will look around and when he gets everything laid out on the table he will make a decision about the option and next year.”

Read believes the Broncos should make a big play for Moses to help rebuild the side for the long-term.

“If I am the Broncos he is my priority,” Read said.

“I would throw a four-year-deal for $3.5 million at him. I understand Adam Reynolds is obviously on their radar. But Adam is 31 this year.

“As much as Reynolds would be a great fit for the place I think Moses is a more long-term investment.

“The other one they could look at is Shaun Johnson, but my gut feel is the Sharks will keep Shaun Johnson and try and pair him with Adam Reynolds in the halves.”

    • Moses will be gunning for Milford's million, that's a certainty. I could be wrong here, but he strikes me as the type that take the biggest offer on the table and worry less about a premiership.

      • He's the complete opposite. The Tigers actually offered him a reviewed offer more after he got the shits as the least important of the then Tigers "Big 4" (Teddy, Woods, Brooks, MM) and demanded an early release.

  • He has a 'feeling' huh. Great journalism.

  • It makes sense for him to do this, a few clubs are in desperate need of a half back and will be willing to throw good money at him. He needs to decide if he wants a chance of winning a premiership over extra money. My gut feel is he will stay but the eels will be forced to pay a little more than they hoped to.

    • And he would be worth every extra dollar we may end up paying.

He is the form halfback in the NRL at the moment.

Happy to lose Nathan Brown or Ryan Matterson if need be to free up more money for Moses.

      • I recon we should offer Lane to other clubs. Also not signing Fergo will free up some salary. Hopefully this will help in  accomodating Moses, N Brown and Matto. We will aslo need to upgrade Papali'i, Opacic and Carty (if he continues to play well) contract.

        • I don't think we'll have to shop anyone to fit Mitch in. The club would've anticipated & planned for this.
There are a lot of ways to move money around from one year to the next to create cap space.

I expect to hear that he's been extended for a further 3-4 years for about 900k per year.

        • I think Lane is not as bad as people are making out.

          • I don't think lane is bad, but he is the worst out of our main fowards. I doubt we can afford to keep all our out off contract players this year with all their values increasing. So I thought get rid of lane so we can keep most of them.

        • Lane certainly has his issues. But he is a big body in the line and is actually pretty decent nrl standard back rower capable of filling in in the middle. They can't all be absolute perfect superstars. The important part is managing the cap and therefore if he's on the right money he is definitely a good player to have in any team's squad.
