Moses and Ryles praise Joash defensive work.

Little note from the presser, Moses and Ryles both full of praise for Joash and his work on the defensive side of the ball. Seems like that's what they mostly want from him at this stage. Keeping his game very simple in attack and focusing on reading the numbers in defence. He may grow into a more attacking role next season but I think the club should still bring in a pezet if possible ? Either way coach and Moses seem happy with Joash work so far.

      • He nearly split them and got ankle tapped to, he's definitely starting to take to it

      • I noticed that too Cheify. Let's hope he keeps improving. Many great players started off as fullbacks and then moved to the halves.

      • I think he just needs to be more direct when ball playing. Because he's not a big guy, the outside defender is happy to turn out knowing Joash isn't going to muscle his way through the inside defender's contact. But if Joash can threaten to go through the gap with his speed then he'll open up more space for his outside men and allow them to attack directly rather than get the ball going sideways.

        • Yep, He seems a great bloke to have around the playing group anyone know if he's a student of the game.

He has to do a lot of work to become a competent 5/8 how much extra work is he currently doing?

Is he an intelligent kid, a quick learner?

Whats the club looking to do for him regarding specific coaching?

If  he manages to successful transition into a starting  5/8 it'll take a lot longer then a single off season , to give him the best chance you have to have a strong pack that eats metres.

I really hope the kid can get the job done, as a club I'm preparing if he can't .

Two games left in the season, there's no pressure at all now a great opportunity for Joash to really take the game on.

          • I think having Walker on the field really helps Joash as well. Look at the kick he put in to Ado Carr - not something a regular 13 would be able to do, added to that his direction through the middle. With Walker, we may have the luxury to take the time to coach a young player into the 5/8 we need.

            • Walker has been a godsend.

It's an extremely low percentage of players that can be manufactured into quality halves.

Hopefully Joash has the right ingredients to make it, he's going to need a shit  tonne of assistance  with coaching , combinations and a platform to learn his trade but ultimately the drive and willingness to be a sponge and put in twice the amount of work to make a go of it has to come from Papalii himself.

We could do worse then ask Cooper Cronk to have a sit down with Joash to talk about his own transition into the halves , the work required and where to focus your energies initially to build up your game.

I don't think people realise the enormity of transitioning into the halves at this level without experience.

A player who bleeds blue and gold as do his family it would be terrific if he can pull it off.

  • Yet there was a blog only the other day that he wasn't suited to being a 5/8. Goes to show how wrong and/or impatient people are on here.

    • Looks like he's building a good off the field friendship with ado Carr so that can only help that edge. If the players and coach are all behind him we have to as well

      • I agree, I'm going to say on that side we've really missed Sean Russell.

        • Yeah brown has done an ok job but Russell definitely being missed right now. Guess we'll have to wait and see who the signings end up being? Could be a strike centre or backrower maybe.
