Metcalf Dragons bound.

Bulldogs have pulled out of the race for Metcalf and his asking price is around 1 million dollars. Dragons most likely spot but to get him immediately I wonder if this means they will allow Sua to join us early to free up cap space to get Metcalf immediately. Just seems logical

  • Metcalf will be 28 when he starts the season next year. 1 mill is way to much he's played 43 games in 5 years. Yes he went well last year until he got injured but the hype around him atm is ridiculous. Even the dogs pulled out of the race once they heard his asking price. He may prove me wrong but i just don't see the hype around him. He didn't have to many others chasing him.

    • 7 is the most important position on the field. You buy the best available option at the price you need to pay. I mean Flanagan or Metcalf? No brainer. 1m is not a crazy asking price

      • Yeah good point. It's Halfback tax. Half decent ones garner big money. If you don't have a Halfback a 7.5/10 one gets same as a 9/10 Halfback just by how important the position is. I beg Boyd nearly tripled his salary in his NZ extension basically just being a Halfback.

        • The bulldogs should of done everything to offload Burton for Metcalf. Sexton is no world beater but look how far backwards Canterbury have gone since replacing him with a rookie 5/8

          • Apparently they were keen, but the $1mil price tag warned them off.

    • I understand the price and Dragons going for him. Though he is a one year wonder. He will be 28 and had injury history. It is a gamble. However, St. George are in the position where they need to gamble.

      • 7s are worth any perceived risk. A good 7 can turn your whole team around instantaneously, we know better than anyone. I don't think Penrith would cover Cleary as well as they used to with all the quality players they've lost. Still a good side but nothing like 2022

  • Dragons paid 900k for Metcalf, 900k for Drinkwater, have Gutherson contracted still for next season at $900k, have Keaon on $1.2mil, Val on $700k. How? They have spent half their cap on 5 players? Is this good recruitment? They don't even have a head coach. Young was thrown to the wolves knowing he won't win a game this year.
