Message to BA. A fast game is a good game.

For the Eels to be true contenders this season we need to speed up the game. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is frustrated by our inability to play fast.At the play of the ball our guys are ridiculously slow to get to our feet to play the ball and rarely fight their way to their feet. That coupled with how fast our tacklers are to release the tackled player has them constantly on the back foot. It seems that opposition team lay over our guys for as long as they like and we spring to our feet as soon as they here the ref call held. I can understand them not wanting to give away penalties but when they have the ball they really need to show some more urgency about pllaying a fast game.Worse than the play the ball is the teams approach to taking penalties. Why the hell do they need to have a conference whenever a penalty is awarded? There never seems to be any set plays carried out after so why the conference. They give the oppositions time for a breather and then to make matters even worse they resume play with an impotent one out run.If we are going to give this comp a serious shake, we need to get our opposition on their heels and running them ragged.Come on BA, SPEED IT UP MATE!

  • The opposition dictate the speed of the game and the ruck.  Newcastle slowed the ruck and as a result we couldn't get any momentum.

We don't have a big powerful pack like the other top teams, therefore we want to play an upbeat fast game every game running good angles and second phase play.

In summary, BA wants to play a fast game every game.  When we were allowed to run (re: Broncos game) we saw how mobile and fast we were up the middle.

  • Only problem is that we don't play fast. We play slow compared to almost all of our opposition and we allow them to play fast.
    • When we are allowed to we do (Broncos, 2 x Dragons, first Cowboys game).  Its very hard to play fast because all teams train very hard to wrestle and lock the body up in the ruck.

We try but the opposite (and sometimes Refs) control the speed of the game.  But we do try and all of the teams that have small packs want to play fast.  We don't intentionally play slow, no team does.

Ball possession and completions also have a big part of the speed of the game.  Unfortunately, for the most part our ball possession is average.

  • Get yourself some sports ears. Atkins in just about every tackle the Titans made last night had to tell them 3 times to get off us but I cant remember getting one penalty for it. Yet when Parra got penalised for it the first words from him was "not fast enough"

    • I agree that it appears the other get warnings whilst we are penalisted but when we have the ball we need to be faster and figth our way off the ground. The other teams are allowed to lay all over up partly because we lackurgency in getting to our feet to play the ball.
  • If we wriggle and fight ou way off the ground the way other teeams players do we will begin to induce penalties and speed up our attack.
  • I agree last nights game against the Titans the play the balls were very slow, but what can you do when the referee won't blow a penalty? I reckon Parra should start to offload more and break up the defence, then you will see quicker play the balls or hopefully penalties.
  • Agree we have been very slow the last two games. Matagi seem to be the only one hitting it up hard, finding the ground and playing it quick. Our other forwards tend to get held up or driven back like in the case of Tim Mannah. The Broncos forwards don't seem to worry about making off loads, they hit the deck quick to suit their smaller quicker halves and hooker. I doubt we can match them in the same style of footy. We need to be Melb like and slow them down.
  • Think we might have been a bit gun shy with our attack on Thursday. After losing to the knights i think BA just wanted to grind out a win and get the confidence back. That won't win it against Broncs or any of the tip sides and I think BA would aware of that. Look fir a different plan this Friday. Fast and attacking the edges

"Yea he is mainly a 5/8, If Lorenzo for some reason fails, Risati is the next option. He is a bigger body than Lorenzo with a great running and passing game. He turns 18 next year so will be in SG Ball alongside Fletcher.
Long term, I belive we can…"

"EA, do you have any thoughts on Risati? Heard big raps on him. The way people talk about him, he could be a long-term six solution, alongside Fletcher at seven. Who knows. We're talking years down the track, but just curious."
