Honestly, just release him. Pay out the last $400k and be done with him. Players now releasing their own Satements shows he isn't behind any club but himself. Cop the loss, he won't see first grade, he won't see a contract extension and he won't get a contract with another club. He is just a toxic player that can rub off others around him. I hope the club either medically retires him or sends him on his way with the $400k free to do as he pleases. He isn't worth keeping around anymore. Sorry about the head knocks but he hasn't been in it for years.
I don't think he plays in the nrl again, too risky with his head knocks. Medical retirement soon
I see no problem with his statement, shame a few others don't follow, rather than their management spitting out politically correct spoofs.
Sorry Cappy, cannot agree with your below mentioned statement.
The fact he got "likes" from media and other sources shows he is withdrawing oxygen, not providing it.
I have been bemused by a lot of commentary in this Lomax trading game and just about every swap has been referenced as a third party without any knowledge or agreement of the players concerned. Some of the naivety of several people, especially on here seem to think the originating club can make someone move, whereas a contract is binding to both sides and is always conducted mutually.
Far out these players need better advice. Releasing a statement like this solves nothing, adds oxygen to the media flames, and creates a further wedge between Matto and the people who pay him.
I completely get why he's aggrieved, but in 24 hours this will be yesterday's news and no one will remember it. But now he's made himself the headline again.
In the sage words of Ronin Keating, you say it best when you say nothing at all.
Let your footy do the talking Matto or simply don't talk. There's no other way to win the PR battle.
Sounds like this is something that Melbourne proposed and Parra didn't consider it an option, especially given the concussion issues Matto is currently going through.
I think you're spot on.
Melb threw it up as a last roll of the dice. We went to Matto (mgmt) with their offer. He said 2yrs guaranteed or no dice. Melb then said - no deal.
How could he not be part of the negotiations. He obviously has a manager. What the fark was his management doing keeping any information secret from Matterson. If he doesn't have a manager, he should be doing his own consulting.
I don't believe a word he is saying
Chiefy, the tricky part here is that media speculation that Matterson was one of the cards on the table is not the same as Matterson formally being a card on the table. Hence the other way to interpret the post is that Matterson has went on record about no consultation. If there was consultation then he is setting himself for an entirely public allegation of straight lying.
Why would he risk easy falsification? So I am going to lean toward the consultation was not really there, because risking easy falsification is so irrational.
I don't think this is not nice by our club not to tell him. But not sure anyone was making him as the villain here, not me at least. He had a right to refuse a deal.
Thx for posting Matto's post, Eli. That post says it all. Matto was not involved until given a fait accompli, but of course Storm-friendly media need to paint his as "stubborn". This is called "cooling out the mark", which is where the loser (Storm) is made to feel better (it's really Matterson and the Eels' fault).
