Match Report: Eels demolish Knights

Anyone with doubts that this Parramatta side can't make a serious tilt at the Premiership will be reconsidering that position after the Eels demolished the Knights 40 to 8. The Eels dominated Newcastle and were a class above the Knights, who until recent weeks have been riding high on the Premiership table. Parramatta has now beaten strung together four consecutive wins with victories against top four sides the Storm and Bulldogs, a comprehensive 30 point win against the Sharks and now a shallacking of Newcastle. And the Eels still have Feleti Mateo and Kris Keating sitting on the sidelines. Once again it was Parramatta's two best players this season Jarryd Hayne and Fuifui Moimoi who were most instrumental in the victory, although there were touches of class all over the park with the likes of Luke Burt, Kris Inu and Joel Reddy also producing inspirational moments. In 1Eyed's preview, we commented how the start would be crucial and things didn't begin as the Eels would have liked, with Steven Simpson scoring a soft try under the posts. It was imperitive the Eels didn't let the Knights get out to a 12 point lead and they ensured that would be the case with ample help from Kurt Gidley. The NSW fullback missed a kick and then Krisnan Inu flew through to ground the ball. Luke Burt's conversion made it six all, however Newcastle regathered the lead via a penalty that made it eight to six. They may have been in front but Newcastle was already finding it increasingly tough as the Eels started to put the pressure on. Luke Burt looked to have done brilliant to ground a cross-field bomb but the try was denied on the grounds that Burt had supposedly interfered with the Newcastle defender. Pfft. Burt would not be denied a second time, however, this time he made a break up the sideline, chipped inside and then managed to regather and score after the ball took a wicked turn evading all other comers. He converted and it was now 12 to eight to Parra. Joel Reddy then attempted to show that anything Burty could do, he could do better. On the last tackle he chipped the ball through for himself, easily run the chase to the pill and touched down. Burt again converted for an 18 to eight lead. That was pushed out to 20 to eight with a penalty on the stroke of half time. Newcastle started the second half with a lot of enthusiasm and they had a number of opportunities but bad hands kept failing as they bombed a couple of tries that would have put them back in the contest. You need to take your chances against this Eels side and the Knights didn't and were then subsequently punished. Kevin Kingston made a fantastic break but the movement was ended by Knights cover defence. However, Jarryd Hayne jumped into first receiver and fired a long cut out pass to an unmarked Eric Grothe who improved the position for another great try that Burt converted. While Newcastle had done well to limit Hayne's impact in the first half, he was now running rampant. He was running cross-field, then stopped a dime, straightened through the defence and then passed inside to Fuifui Moimoi, trailing on the inside. Moimoi was brilliant again today and there's no better prop in the competition at the moment. Another Burt conversion made it 34 to eight. The Eels put the icing on the cake with some sensational play from Krisnan Inu who put Burt away for a double and the Eels winger again potted the goal to make it 100 per cent and finalise the 40 to eight win. The only negative for the Eels are injuries to both Nathan Cayless and Joe Galuvao. That will ensure Feleti Mateo returns to the side next week, while Daniel Anderson will still have a tough week deciding if Kris Keating should return or if he should stick with Jeff Robson next week when the Eels continue their race for the finals against the Warriors.
