Mark o'neill

* failed with the get out clauses

* failed with attracting top players

* The Brown contract was a complete stuff up

* Needed Ryles to hold his hand to finally fix development, where previously reserve grade was a holding yard for rejected players

* lost out on recent big name signings

Shane Richardson

* A proven winner

* Helped Souths become champions

Took the Cronulla sharks from perennial losers to grand finalists

* attracted many big names to the Tigers despite being 3 times losers. Jerome Luai,  Taylan May ect

* A noted track record of success and attracting big talent.

Make it happen now.

At the moment  - we're wasting time and O'neill a dead man walking

    • Sarantinos is not on Eels board I believe so he doesn't fit within the 9 year rule. It said in the constitution that members of the board serve 3 years and can serve an additional 2x3 year terms, so 9 years.

But Sarantinos is not elected of course so I believe he can stay as long as possible.

      • Yes he is an executive director. Not elected from the board, he could be replaced at any time, i.e not an elected director.

  • An organisation should always be looking to improve itself. If that means getting rid of a person to get a better person then so be it.

Question is this: is Richardson the best person for our specific role?

    • The consequences of that is does Shane Richardson want to be the head of football. If he does then that question becomes relevant! The best person becomes only relevant when considering who is available......or who you would ask to be available.

The best person is always subjective.

    • We can improve it by educating or learning from the best as well Badger. If Richo dosnt want to be head of football, or the club don't want to move O'Neill on, then bring Richo in as a consultant or put him on special teams where he takes lead in negotiations concerning big names , marquee type signings, the ones we are not closing at the moment type of deal. A gun for hire on a yearly retainer or something. Let O'Neill study and watch from someone that has stolen and signed players like Luai, Latrell, Inglis etc.

      • Bluey, that's the key for me also.

Maybe MoN is doing a great job in certain areas, maybe it's not about replacing him (maybe it is), but maybe its a new hire / position to rectify a specific & clear issue within the club.

My fear with the Eels is they don't see recruitment as an issue, at least in what they've said externally / within that pre season members meeting.

Ryles is the one, imo, who may be able to force change in R&R. He made a few comments last year around the 5/8th situation that resonated.

The Eels have been incapable of signing a certain level of player he's identified, and if results suffer they may be forced into change, or, losing JR longer term.

No coach will stay if the club cannot sign the talent to compete.

Why not a consultancy role, or a specific role as you mentioned, for someone to assist in pitching too & signing players & importantly, their families.

Whether that is Richardson, or someone else, are we open to that as a club? Not so sure.

        • I think Brian Smith is perfect for that role NOS. Though he's been out of the game for a while, he always had an eye for talent was able to attract talent. He could talk well to players.
You could be right in that MON is doing ok just needs someone else in another area.
Now is ok good enough? No but who else is out there other than Richo who might prefer CEO instead of GM.

Now your concern of not thinking recruitment is an issue based on meetings, who knows maybe they feel that is something they don't disclose their real thoughts about. I know if they said they are frustrated with recruitment I'd be worried but if they look calm then some fans will be. Could be wrong, playing devil's advocate.

But surely missing Galvin, then Keaon, then Barnett and a few others surely that will have Ryles ask questions.

It shouldn't be his job but Ryles is the one, as you said, that needs to bring up to the board that something different needs to happen at GM. To succeed he needs players from outside, all well and good having junior talent but need some experience mixed in too. We are not getting that and having to settle for middle of the range to fill the gaps hoping a rookie is ready early.

          • For sure, LB. Agree with everything you said.

It's a certain skillset it seems. Smith definitely had it.

Yep absolutely, we don't know how the club feels about recruitment, it's just my concern personally, based off the information we do have.

As you & Chief mentioned, and completely agree, it feels we are wasting time currently. And valuable time with Moses.

      • I'd go after Peter O'Sulivan personally that guy has been around and about and is an experienced roster builder on teams in every state of there development.

    • Best person? No idea and never will have an idea until they are a few years into the job. You could get Matt Cameron and he could do a poor job, just never know.

Better than what we have? Yes. That makes appointing him go down well. Is he best man? No idea, but is he better than MON? His 2 premierships say yes.
