Now a forward for NRL's Parramatta Eels, Ma'u has returned to Spring Hill prison in the Waikato to speak to prisoners about his story.

The former JDK youth gang member spent 22 months there from 2007, convicted of grievous bodily harm and wounding with intent to injure.

"I just want the boys to know there's hope out here hope outside these walls - they can make it and don't just think because they are in prison there is no other way," he says.

Ma'u said he used the long stretches behind bars to train and work out – and to improve his league skills.

"When I came out I was more like mature more disciplined," he says.

"It was just trying to control your aggression in a positive way, like tackling, running yeah and it really helped my game."

Ma'u, who just had a strong season with the Eels, says he owes his success to his close family and people who believed in him.

TVNZ's Sunday programme will feature Manu’s inspirational story tonight at 7pm.

  • The story of Manu Ma'u and inspiring other inmates to never give up on dreams.

This is the video that accompanies the story.
What a man he has become to not only turn his life around but to go back to where it all went wrong and help others reach their dreams. That there is life on the other side and after jail, if you never give up.

    • Thanks for the link.

      His voice is so soft.

  • Leopards never change their stripes, we go we deserved.

  • Read the story and watch the video in the link below, Spanner.

Ma'u has returned to prison but not as an inmate. He's returned to Spring Hill Prison to inspire other inmates and tell them that dreams are achievable when you get out.
