Manly signed Marty tapou

How the hell does manly have all this money to buy all these players Lewis brown,Apikouros, Nate mykes, re sign half their rooster, hoppiate and darcy lussick. Yet we have average players around the park and we are always over the salary cap. Please explain!!! How can parra ever be a force when other clubs can buy great players like that and be under the salary cap

  • I think you've provided your own answer there matty - among all that, they've only been able to sign half of their rooster. Talk about going off at half cock.....

  • Manly are still looking ordinary for next year.
  • Honestly, it's easy to have a go at a team for being over the cap or to question how a team can buy the players they do when there's a range of factors involved.

Manly have Jamie Lyon, Steve Matai, Brett Stewart & Matt Ballin all eligible for long-term player concessions under the salary cap for starters.

They've lost numerous players that were a part of their top 25 in Cheyse Blair, Dunamis Lui, Jesse Sene-Lefao, Justin Horo, Kieran Foran & James Hasson, as well as fringe players like Ligi Sao and Jack Littlejohn.

That alone frees up a hell of a lot of money and the players they've signed, only Myles and maybe Taupau would be on extravagant type money, IMO.

The rest will be a part of their top 25 but on smaller amounts overall.

And don't forget they still have a fair few off-contract players unlikely to be retained, so that only gives them more cap space.

I'm not supporting Manly in any sense but you cannot simply presume that they're over the cap when a good portion of their roster has either left or eligible for player concessions.

    • Matt Ballin has also been released to sign with the Tigers.

  • I've always wondered how it works when Manly's many long term players finally get paid their back ended 'unders for sticking together' payments. For eg with Foran leaving would the amount he was owed fall into next years salary cap for them, likewise the Stewart and Whatmough amounts for this year.
It's a complicated business when a club has so many on back ended deals surely sooner or later it has to show up in the audits.
This ' unders to stick together' thing worked well for them for so long, very clever. In times where we and other clubs were either coping fines or having to let players go, they somehow managed to keep their stars together? Well played I guess!
Marty Taupau is an excellent purchase for them, perfect signing.

It's clear to see that Taupau runs hard and at full-steam ahead, more often than not breaking at least one tackle. Overall though, he's had an average sort of year, really only standing out and excelling in a handful of games.

Good player but can be erratic at times and his work-ethic can be a bit poor.

Decent pick-up for Manly - once it's confirmed - but he certainly has work to do to become an elite player.

If anyone wants his 2013 stats, just let me know. Can post those up as well.

    • The key stat there for Tapau is his tackle breaks - they usually mean a quick play-the-ball follows, which is hugely beneficial for whoever gets the ball on the next play.

    • You would think that a power runner like Tapau would be just the kind of player Manly would need, given their 2015 forward pack struggled for metres.

  • We didn't get Choc because we paid huge money, we got him because we gave him a contract right through until he turns 40.

    • Still young for the Eels!!!!
