Well, we just release him and add more $$$ to the war chest. Then we front load more contracts, extend and upgrade youngsters contracts, then cross our fingers and pray that some become quality.
Only problem with that ploy, is you develop only to have other clubs swoop and then you have to develop again.
That's a good habit to have though the development angle we want the conveyor belt to continue.The issue isn't other clubs taking our juniors that's where we want to be our key is identifying and keeping the best ones fully understanding we can't keep them all.
This should be and should have always been our DNA.Brian Smith and co had it correct if you do it right ala Riff you'll always be in the discussion always.This year Riff have come from dead last to nie on run in the top 4.That's with injuries and SoO the lot.There strong enough to withstand the mentioned we are not we want to get to there this has to be our goal.
We don't want to be prisoners to the market and fighting it out with all the other vultures we want to use the market to be strategic and get signings that we need not out of desperation but through choice.
I use Riff as the shining example,Talagi is looking the goods after half a season at 6 Papali'i another strategic Riff pickup this is the type of position we want to be in and all the rest are for the most part Parra developed.I think this has to be the aim for the club if it wants to get back to the glory days.
Panthers are at different stages of squad development & growth.
Developing takes plenty of time and we don't have it. It's 40 years next year. Ryles doesn't have the luxury of time.
Even the Panthers who you noted as the doyens of development, initially started with buying a heap of quality players to assist with the development of the younger guns coming through. It's only now that they have the core of those youngsters that they are reaping the rewards.
These youngsters who came through all together are now the experienced group helping bring through the next group of talent.
That's how it's done not ass around first. We don't have enough experience in key areas (ie spine) to help the young talent come through yet, that's why your development model doesn't work at the begining of the cycling of becoming a 'development club'.
IMO, we need both, recruitment of talent/experience initially to help bring through the new talent and once that new talent gains enough experience they are kept to help bring through the next lot. Wash, rinse & repeat.
Yes we do need both but our DNA needs to reflect our strength.Thats our issue when your best junior in the last decade is DB with not much behind it outside him that's an issue.
When we do get a few like Talagi and Sanders and they leave with not much behind it that's an issue.
The problem with the market the quality out there is thinning out and with new teams entering the fray this becomes diluted even more.
Development and retention of the good ones has to be the priority if it isn't the clubs in big trouble.We also need to look further afield for talent aswell not join the herd going after the same players.
