Live Game Blog: Tigers defeat Eels

The Wests Tigers beat the Parramatta Eels 20 points to 12 tonight to win the Sean Burns Memorial Shield trial match at Gosford's Bluetongue Stadium.

However, it should be noted that as well as missing Reni Maitua and Willie Tonga, who were both not named in the side, the Eels also went into the game without their two marquee players with Jarryd Hayne and Nathan Hindmarsh both being late pull-outs.

Despite the Eels applying early pressure, Benji Marshall put Matt Utai through a hole to bring up the first try of the match.

However, the Eels struck back when Esi Tonga scored from a Chris Sandow kick. Burt converted to level the scores.

It didn't take long though for the Tigers to re-assert their lead, taking advantage of an in-goal knock-on. From the resumption of play Gareth Ellis stepped past Esi Tonga before putting Blake Ayshford over to score. Tonga was again caught again in defence, with the Tigers further extending their lead through another try down the same side to Beau Ryan, only this time Marshall failed to convert. Just before half-time they pushed their advantage out to 14 with Utai again scoring down Ken Sio's wing.

The second half was a relatively dull affair, that saw Parramatta score a consolation try in the last minute through youngster Vai Toutai. With Burt and Sandow off the field, Joseph Paulo converted from the sideline.

There are a few injury concerns. Mitchell Allgood came from the field concussed in the early minutes and Justin Poore also came off with what looked like a leg injury, as did Chris Sandow. Luke Burt also made an early exit, but it is not known at this stage if it was injury related.

Earlier, the Tigers triumphed in the NYC match 16 to 4.

"For sure, the senior players like Moses and Junz should lead the way and earn the right to play expansive footy. If they come out and just start throwing it around playing touch footy we will be in trouble. "
