Ken Thornett Medal - The Mingle

Thanks to our resident play by play caller, Forty, for his fine blogging during the night. I thought I'd now add my perspective on the night as a social occasion.Tonight I was able to meet a few more Eels people. I'll limit my feedback to the playing side of things.Danny Wicks. What a champion bloke! Gave plenty of his time in talking to a couple of us and didn't respond to our questions with cliche answers. This bloke is absolutely pumped about next year. He said that everyone always talks about next year, but he is honestly chomping at the bit to get on with the new year. You can see from the look in his eye when he speaks about it that he means business. Massive fan of BA.Junior Paulo. This bloke needs to be put in front of a microphone more often. Very comfortable talking to a group of fans and he's another player who doesn't give cliche responses. Really proud of the job that our forwards did this year but wants to take it to the next level next year.Peter Wynn. A favourite from yesteryear and a genuinely great bloke to chat to. He ends up asking as many questions about you as you do of him so that it just feels like s regular conversation, not a fan asking a former star lots of questions.Mick Cronin. I've not spoken to the Crow since I was a teenager. Very humble, natural bloke. I enjoyed the banter that occurred between Edge, Wynn and Cronin during the evening.i hope one of the other attendees can remember Steve Edge's classic line from the evening.Brad Arthur. Relaxed and very approachable for a chat. Seems very positive about next year.Additional ObservationCorey Norman. Seems like the life of the party.Final WordTim Mannah. Played well this year and his public speaking skills were impressive tonight. Congratulations Tim!Hopefully other attendees can add their own experiences from the evening.

  • Sounds like it would have been a great night. Looking forward to seeing Wicks and Junior next year... perhaps we should rest them from the 9's. Don't want another Kenny Edwards incident!

    • It was an enjoyable evening. The running banter between each of the 80s legends was hilarious and it was good to see another Parra tragic in the media, Adam Hawse, host the evening. It had been many years since I'd been to Curzon Hall and it didn't disappoint as a venue.
  • I spoke with Danny a few weeks after he was ruled out for the season and he was still absolutely filthy he was finished for the year.
Very good bloke and one of the last players I would want to tackle!
Happy he signed with us and with his efforts this year.
Was Kenny Edwards there and if so, is he looking fit and keen?
Can't wait to see him back on the field.
    • I'm not sure about Kenny. The room was enormous. I only saw some players towards the end of the evening as the numbers in the room dwindled.
As for Danny, I'm so pleased that a bloke like him values our Jersey as he does.
    • Kenny's currently on holidays on the Gold Coast.

  • Thank you for the insight! Just on Junior P, when you look at him and the age he is very surprised he is already able to confidently speak in front of many a people, got to love that kid hope he is an eel for life... for all of those who went, out of curiosity did it come across as a family affair or was there any tension between some parties involved?
    • It was a big event numbers wise, so it would be difficult to call it a family affair. However, the vibe was good all night and as a supporter, it gave an opportunity to meet and mingle with players and staff without it feeling like some sort of open day where the players were on the job.
As for Junior, we put it to him that he should be put on the Microphone more often. He looked genuinely surprised by our comments. Good bloke.
  • Hey sixties, any sign if Hopoate?
You wouldn't think a player who's suing our club would have been invited to an awards night.
    • He was there. Sad thing for Hoppa is that the advice from those around him outside the club, in my opinion, may not be the best. Regardless of his form, he's a nice bloke and he has been advised to take his current course of action.
    • Hopoate was in attendance.

"I don't think this is not nice by our club not to tell him. But not sure anyone was making him as the villain here, not me at least. He had a right to refuse a deal."

"Sounds like this is something that Melbourne proposed and Parra didn't consider it an option, especially given the concussion issues Matto is currently going through."
