Jarryd Hayne's dream of breaking back into the San Francisco 49ers appears to have taken a serious hit after one coach said the Australian 'just didn't work out'.
Speculation of Hayne's return to the team reached fever pitch after a growing list of 49ers running backs were injured and unable to play.
However 49ers special teams co-ordinator Thomas McGaughey dashed the Hayne Plane's hopes of a returning citing more time on the practice squad to learn the complexities of the game.
Speculation of Hayne's return to the team is rife after a growing list of 49ers running backs were injured
Coach Thomas McGaughey: 'He needs to learn how to play football. To learn how to run and cover kicks and protect punts'
'He just needs to learn the game from the inside out,' Mr McGaughey told reporters.
'You can't throw in 18 years worth of situations in six months. It takes 21 years to be 21 years old. That's just the reality of it. Hayne needs to find his way to speed the process up,' he said.
The coach commended Hayne's performance during the pre-season, but said the former Parramatta Eels superstar needed to increase his skill set.

Careful slip, members on this site who believe Hayne has a long and successful career will shoot you down.
Just because he's 27, never played the game, broken records for the most fumbles in season despite only playing a hand full of games doesn't mean he won't be the next OJ.
Just because the worst franchise in the NFL won't give him a crack despite their massive injury toll doesn't mean he won't be the an NFL sensation.
It's time Hayne comes home. Most likely Roosters. :(
Extremely long odds of ever playing NFL again. Uncle nik may just have parked
that new Range Rover awaiting at Sydney Airport.
you are correct, Broncos bulldogs manly or any other team that doesn't seem to need a salary cap.
