This website is a well written analysis, of Storms targeting of Eels poor defence especially around the marker and Gutho up in the line and pressure from our forwards. I would hope Brad fixes up these mistakes.

  • All of those tries are created off winning the collision which allows there creative players time on the ball against a passive defence.

If you have a look at these clips you also notice how there is zero inside pressure on these ball players zero. When good ball players have time this is what happens but it's based off winning the ruck.

I mean have a look at the Welch clip 3 defenders don't put him on the deck or lock the ball up.

The Jahrome Hughes try setup to Grant no line speed.

Same when Asi gets isolated on Katoa deadset the Dline has set its feet on there own goal line.We just don't help ourselves.

    • I agree Coryn. The issues arise from us not being dominant enough in the ruck. We don't do enough to slow our opposition and more times than not we struggle to even get 2 markers in place.

As great as Gutho's defence is, we rely way too much on him. As soon as he makes a cover tackle he's out of position and now the opposition have finally caught on and are exploiting it.

If Gutho's not there organising and covering for any gaps that pop up in our defensive line, we have no cover, which any good play maker will take advantage of.

The answer is to stop getting smashed in the ruck, giving us more time to set our defensive structures. This leads to less missed tackles and less cover tackles Gutho has to make.

As much as i don't like it, we need to start wrestling to slow the opposition play-the-ball,

      • Some teams have UFC wrestling coaches as far as I am aware Eels do not, our spend on support training staff is way less than other teams is this due to the new regulations we have put on the club since the salary cap saga. We should be bringing in UFC wrestlers to teach all our players how to slow down the ruck as much as possible. And we should be hiring a new defence coach and a goal kicking coach to work on moses and a new kicker eventually.

        • It sounds at times we are like Liverpool, can be a big club and done well for ourselves but always seem to be strapped for cash behind the scenes compared to others. I really think we would be an attractive purchase for private ownership, like Cannon-Brooks with Souths.

          • I think that is the only way we end up winning again. Privatisation.

Relying on the current setup will continue to deliver what we are currently getting...

            • Other people's money.

Thats the issue - no one gives a fuck about results because it's not their money. Privatisation should fix that.

            • I suppose Penrith is privately owned. Oh, fucking wait, they have the same leagues club ownership we do. Privatisation doesn't automatically fix a problem and it's a crap shoot. You can get a good owner, or you can get a shit owner. And if you get a shit owner there is SFA you can do about it. At least with our ownership the board can be held accountable if the members so choose.

              • Super  can eels members vote the entire footy  board out if they feel they aren't doing the job or do they have less power than what Panther members have ?

                • We can vote in triennial elections and in so doing can vote out the entire board if we so choose, although it would take 3 years to do it.

Penrith have a 7 person board and at their 2022 election 5 positions were up for election.

                  • Well that can be a issue because a board can do things that goes completely against what fans and members want and their is no avenue for the members to take immediate action .
