Interesting comments on injuries from Roosters coach

I was listening to Big Sports Breakfast this morning and listening to Robbo speak about the Roosters season. The point of my blog was to highlight when TK suggested its just terrible luck with injuries to key players Pearce and JWH at this time of the year he actually corrected him.

Robbo said "Well no TK I don't agree in luck with injuries. If you have injuries there is normally a reason for them and perhaps we have let the guys down in some way. We will be reviewing this closely." He went on to say he may rest some players if they need it this week seeing as how brutal the Brisbane game was. he also made note that often they watch a players behaviour and tap him on the shoulder for a rest rather thanthe other way around.

I am not taking this as a chance to bag the Eels staff but I did like Robbo's attitude on this. I think yes, a few injuries can be rotten luck but just how many have we had this year?

Anyone else hear this?

  • Whilst there are sometimes a correlation between injuries and training regimes I think its very foolish to try and quantify the link as something solid and predictable. Most injuries occur through collision which is nothing but bad luck.
    • I thought the majority of injuries were non-contact - Hammies, ACL's, ankles are all generally non-contact. Could be wrong, but yeah, seems like contact injuries are generally more upper body - pectorals, biceps, neck...
  • But it doesn't surprise me that a professional organisation like the roosters are looking into it. It should be part of every post season review.
  • Sure, but from the get-go this year we haven't had the capability to rest people. We only had a Top 21 or 22, of which Edwards/Champion went down early, and we were using 2nd tier money within 3 week. We just simply were not in a position to rest players unfortunately. A lot of guys have played injured for a lot of games and toughed it out because they had to (Choc, Wicks, Taka, Norman, Moeroa, Semi etc). It'd be nice to restplayers, but it's a lot diff to the Roosters as they can give 1 or 2 a rest and still win. We don't have the quality or depth to do that. Our current side has 3-4 NSW Cup players in it already. And these clubs like Syd/Bris are in good salary cap positions do so, and also ladder positions. For us, we have needed everyone out there every week just to try and stay competitive. Resting players would also have got BA extra flak he didn't need, can you imagine him resting some of our better players for games like yesterday, then if we lost, that would then be blamed as the reason? There's no easy way out for the players or BA, luckily, only 2 weeks remain!
  • Robinson can afford to say this. Prior to this week the Roosters had used a total of 24 different players for the season, with 6 of these players required for 6 games or less. In other words, they have been able to use a core group of 18 players for most of the season. That had been amazing. Of course they can talk about resting a player or two. In comparison, Parra had used 29 different players with 6 required for 6 games or less. In other words, we have had to use 23 different players for extended periods. This means unsettled line ups and no opportunity to rest players.
    • Yes I agree totally. I guess my point was more in relation to his attitude. Rather than say its terrible luck his attitude is about putting things in place, or giving themselves the best chance possible to improve injuries.

Now if you look at how many injuries Parramatta has had this season, surely it cannot be all down to bad luck from collisions.

      Are we doing enough???

  • Robinson is a typical coach who, after a bit of success, starts to think he invented the air in the footy.

As usual with successful coaches, he got the right team at the right time. I am not saying he can't coach but they all start to overemphasize their importance after a bit of success.

  • Injuries are part and parcel of the game; and yes could be from training methods; but many are from bad luck; look at Manly hooker yesterday and Greg Bird; it is all bad luck. BA does not complain in media about it; he just says, it is someone else' chance. Yesterday Alvaro got his chance again, and they did well.
