Hybrid Game This Sunday

I asked before if anyone is going to the Hybrid Game at Pirtek on Sunday at 3pm. For more info go to Hybrid Facebook. It is between Randwick Rugby and Western Surburbs Rugby League. I know it will be very fast.

  • Actually sounds like a really interesting thing to watch for those wanting a last game of the season, wonder what rules it is?

    Thanks PK.

  • Private school vs public school
    Rich vs poor
  • Go Wests!
  • The last time this was done they played half the game with league rules and half with rugby.
Obviously the teams won the halves with their own rules.
After the game the rugby coach said it was interesting and maybe a hybrid would come of it.
The league coach said rugby is so boring, you might as well shove the ball up your ass and walk up field.
  • When the rules are combined, which in this case it has play the balls in your own half and rucks in the attacking half, there is the risk of specific rugby skills being able to dominate eg 50 metre rolling mauls.
  • In fact, given that rugby league has evolved from rugby union, any hybrid game may be a step forward for rugby union but a step backward for league. Rugby union (kick and clap) has more of a global audience and no doubt league would be envious of their World Cup. However, domestically, union is not in a great place and urgently needs the headlines of a successful Wallabies Cup campaign. I say this as someone who mostly played Union in my childhood. My junior club, in the heart of Western Sydney, along with most of the clubs I played against, no longer exists. They were all once strong clubs with all ages covered in their teams.
  • I'm going with some mates. Should be interesting.
  • Many years ago they had 2 matches between Wigan (league) and Bath (Union). The difference was that they played the first game as league and the second game as union. In the league game it was an embarrassing thrashing for Bath - 82 to 6. In the union game, Bath began with a 50 metre rolling maul, not the most thrilling sight! When the maul finally ended just short of the line a scrum was packed and a penalty try was awarded for Wigan collapsing the scrum. The boos for the rolling maul and scrummaging must have had their effect because it pretty much disappeared from the match from then on. After all the union team could have held the ball doing nothing but mauling. The final score to Bath was 44 to 19, so the league boys acquitted themselves quite well. I remember watching both games and acknowledging the superiority of the league athlete to the union athlete. In reality, union had just turned professional back then. In fact, Union signed a number of the Wigan backs, Tuigamala and Robinson included. However, I had to tip my hat to the union boys because they could have killed off the second match through superior forward skills. In fact any hybrid game that allowed for full rucks, mauls and scrums would be a disaster for today's league players who have little scrummaging skills.
