Hunt as a pack

A big issue I've had with the side over the last few years is the lack of cohesion within the forward pack.We have dummy halfs who fail to engage the markers or recognise the advantages of a quick play the ball. We are in desperate need of somebody to coordinate the forward pack. With Forans arrival we can't expect him to control both the forwards and backs as it makes us one dimensional.Mannah should be taking the first hit up of a set, with his ability to find his feet to play the ball quickly it's essential the next hit up is followed by a forward with quick leg speed. Thus enabling us to build momentum off our sets. The lack of a running threat from dummy half is our biggest forecasted weakness in my view . We need to hunt as a pack . Support the ball carrier. With the new interchange rule, fast play the the balls will become a premium. The amount of times this year a middle forward took the ball forward as a settler on the fifth tackle was down right embarrassing. The back row needs to be a constant threat on the edges by running varying lines giving our halves options, facilitating expedient ball to the outside men off the back of the domination of the ruck

  • Some good points there mate, i think Beau Scott is going to really help this team pack with exactly what your talking about with hunting as a pack and unity in the forwards, and Choc will be rested and ready to go, Scott really the forgotton signing imo, basically no talk about him, hes a real competitor.

We are getting a really good blend of experience and youth.

Spot on about dummy half, we need a lot more running from there.

Nathan Peats really needs to step it up with his running and attacking game and back off the defence a bit.

I truly believe that our pack next year will be mixing it with the very best with the additions weve made and footy is a confidence game, our game will go to new heights with the confidence Foz brings.

    • Agree 100% with both of you. It's game on from next year and we have some talent here now to really shake up the top 8. If not even go further, no excuses in my eyes from now on. Peats can die off the defence now and let the second rowers we have to take care of things. This is the most excited I have been in a long time. Bring it on.
  • So you want Mannah to stand at fullback or wing? How the hell is he meant to take the first or even second hit up when most sets start from a kick return? A forward generally won't hit the ball up until the 3rd.
    • Fame Game by a big margin for me Poppa, Hokko Brave, Preferrment, Trip to Paris . I'll be loading up on the first four and trifectas. Barring rain Kingston Rules race record will topple. This is the best feild in a long time.
  • Poppa, don't know if Peats is a hog, but I do know he is one of our most competitive and therefore maybe there were times he was reluctant to give it to those who continually made mistakes.

I think with better players across the ground, next year those doing the hard yards won't see them being undone by a right side defensive lapse. For a competitive player like Peats, that would do their head in.
  • Peats is well aware of the need to improve his attacking game. I'll be interested to see if he can take it further. I really like the recruitment of King. His time at the Cowboys may not have involved too much NRL match experience but it doesn't hurt recruiting a talented player who's just come from the premiership club.
This attack from dummy half will become more crucial under the new interchange. Some tiring forwards will open up chances to attack around the ruck. Will too much attack from there cause a rethink of the potential to reduce interchanges to 6? Will coaches start to only select very fit, mobile forwards?
    • King is the man I see as the most complete rake in our roster. Strong runner of the football and an ability to read the ruck. Quality defender who has a kicking game as well. I'm actually pinning our season on him stepping up. An in form Cameron King will make the Eels a very dangerous football side . I'm glad the brains trust is clearly recognising our on feild deficiency by recruiting players to fill these holes, ones which fit easily within the salary cap and also have a lot of scope for improvement. They don't always pan out . With King I'm quietly confident.

    • Having alternatives in place when a bloke is coming off contract is a smart move.
  • It will be interesting to see Bup. King might have the versatility to end up on the bench. IDG will probably retire. The presence of others like King and Pritchard should motivate Peats.
  • King has never played for Penrith, he started off with the Dragons and then we signed him from the Cowboys. He also has had a terrible run with injuries.
