Hoppa Situation

The Hoppa signing was just ridiculous at $600k pa which means the $800k pa mentioned previously for prior years was probably right. The way I read it, and I may be completely wrong, is as his contract was not registered with NRL probably means he had performance hurdles he had to achieve. Obviously he didn't achieve those KPI so now his agent thought I will get media involved to embarass the club into paying him.

Our right side is by far the worst for attack and defence of probably any club in the comp. But the real question to ask is why would they offer him this much money? Really tell me which other club pays a centre $600k? None I would suggest!

Sorry all those Hoppa lovers out there he just doesn't cut it at centre, fullback or winger. Maybe in the forwards might be his go as he loves doing hitups.

Our right side needs to be improved and Hoppa is not the answer. However he is probably the answer as to why that side is so poor. He needs to go and be replaced with a decent centre.

  • Imagine if he received royalties for every new blog written about him on oee .
    • yeah One Eyed Eels would be broke by now LOL maybe we should all donate five cents to the Get-Rid-Of-Hoppa-Fund Rising?

  • Don't understand this blog.

If Hoppa didn't achieve his kpi's why offer him another contract @ 600k in the first place ???
    • Chief read it again if you don't understand it as it is written in English. Apparently the contract was offered in May at least 3 months ago.

    • Like I've said, you don't offer a 600k contact to a player you're hoping will become a 600k player if he achieves something he already hasn't.

Maybe that's the reason Arthur's contact was reportedly withheld.
  • I think the only positions Hoppa could cover realistically as a first grader going forward would be as a bog standard - reliable winger on 200k max, or make a move to the forwards (obviously this would require a bit of bulking).

I can't blame Parramatta for buying him, when he left Manly he was a very promising 19 year old. But it seems that his ability was probably overstated in hindsight. He was playing in arguably the best backline in rugby league since the Raiders backline of the early 1990's and maybe he was just one of those players who was mature for his age but hit a wall early.

    • yeh true, but he did show a lot of skill and potential and he actually had a bit of speed and explosiveness back then.

He's always been sound in defence and good with his hands but he has lacked punch and quickness since coming back to the NRL. i wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt last year as it was his 1st year back in the game, but i actually think he played better last year. Mind you our back line was better with the likes of Hayne, Tonga and Sio.

  • Im no Hoppa lover but who do we get to replace him with?

  • > as his contract was not registered with NRL probably means he had performance hurdles he had to achieve. Obviously he didn't achieve those KPI so now his agent thought I will get media involved to embarass the club into paying him.

I doubt it. The way it reads, and it sounds pretty plausible, is that we offered him a contract, he signed, we started auditing our own salary cap more closely and realised that we couldn't honour his contract without pushing our cap next year so we decided not to register the contract with the NRL and attempted to go back into negotiation with Hoppa.

Hoppa and his management didn't like this because:

    a) We're now offering him less money than we were on the original contract he signed and

    b) His performances (including Origin) have been so un-noteworthy that his market value would be no where near what we originally offered him meaning he can't just shop himself to other clubs to pick up a good deal (because he's not going to get the $$)

So Hoppa and his management have seen the best way to get money is to try to enforce the original contract. Worst case for them? They lose, have to pay court costs, and Hoppa picks up a correct market value contract with the Eels or someone else. Best case for Hoppa? He wins, agrees to leave the Eels, signs a true market value contract with another team and the Eels have to pay him the gap between real market value and his original deal.

Long story short, if Hoppa was performing anywhere near the value of the dollars we originally offered him, there would be no court action. He'd just leave and get picked up elsewhere. He's now chasing money because he knows his performance doesn't warrant the value offered.

  • You gotta stay off the drugs champ. He is by far the best centre we have at the club. Worth $600k maybe not, but he is by far our best centre.
