Hayne Plane Guides Eels To Victory

The Parramatta Eels have broken their drought, defeating the Gold Coast Titans 24-18 in a tough clash on the Gold Coast.

Jarryd Hayne produced another highlights filled performance that turned the match on its head.

The Titans opened the scoring through a rampaging Dave Taylor. The big man crashing over off a Brad Takairangi short ball.

15 minutes later and the Eels responded, Chris Sandow taking the ball to the line and finding an unmarked Ken Sio who crossed out-wide.

The Eels looked threatening down their left edge but Semi Radradra was unable to control a Ken Edwards pass.

The Titans took advantage of a penalty goal on offer and the half-time score stood at 8-6.

The Gold Coast crossed shortly after half-time through Anthony Don who collected a superbly weighted Daniel Mortimer kick. The missed conversion saw the Titans led 12-6.

Jarryd Hayne then decided to inject himself. 30 metres out from his own line he took a pass from Sandow and ran at his NSW teammate, Greg Bird. Shrugging off Bird, Hayne accelerated upfield before standing up Kevin Gordon and scoring in the corner.

Chris Sandow showed that he's got his mojo back, nailing the sideline kick.

Hayne was in again shortly after when Chris Sandow took on the line before popping the ball to a screaming Jarryd Hayne who scored next to the posts. The Eels took the lead 18-12.

Corey Norman then pushed home the Eels' advantage when he chased through a Chris Sandow grubber, diving on the loose ball. Sandow's fourth conversion saw the score at 24-12.

With under a minute to play, James Roberts was able to scoot around the Eels' defence to score but time ran out. The Eels triumphant, 24-18.

It was the first time since 2010 that the Eels had comeback from a half-time deficit away from home to win.

The two points gained sees the Eels into 10th spot, equal with the Warriors, Broncos and Tigers.

Parramatta face the Cronulla Sharks next week in a match that could see the Eels climb back into the Top 8.

  • The most pleasing thing I saw tonight was the number of repeat sets. For the first time in many years, we ground the opposition down and the points eventually came. This is a blueprint for how to get into the top 4.
    • Yes. Especially at the start of the game.
  • Muttman, spot on. This blog should be headed with something like "Sandow Show....", because it was Sandow's kicking game and direction in the opposition 40 that kept getting us in position for either a repeat set or the Titans forced to work it off their own line. of course Hayne had a blinder in the second half but this win was Sandow's. If Sandow can do that more often, which is to say play a mature game, the Eels will go OK.
  • There was a moment in the match when we had a line break down the left edge and got tackled on the 5th tackle 10 metres out from the try line. So it was now the last tackle. This is where Sandow would normally grubber for himself or bomb to the wing and any other 'all or nothing' play. But tonight he rolls it into the in goal. A definite change in the way he's playing the game and not before time. As you say if he keeps this up we'll go ok.
  • About the only Plane who didn't crash this week

    • I move this be included in the 1 Eyed Eel one liners hall of fame.

Every one is allowed a "Brain Snap" now and then Super - this is your's for 2014.

Cronulla is one of our bogey sides - oops - so are the other 15 in the comp.

Nearly had a brain snap myself.

    • It's not quite a brain snap. It's an each-way bet. We could move into the eight or we may not.

  • I can see our poor for and against keeping us out of the eight this year which is a shame. But in all honesty I am not going to be devastated because we aren't genuine contenders this year but we will be next year.
  • F&A says we have LESS than a snowflakes chance in hell of making the 8.

We need to be 2 points clear of the 8th placed team which means we have to win EVERY game from here on in and hope like hell no other team can top it.

    At best - 10th.

Jason Ryles was on the record saying that recruitment will happen but they are waiting to see how the market turns out. So what does he mean by that. Well look back no further than late 2019. Both RCG and Matterson were contracted with Penrith and…

"Issue is $1.5mil plus for a Lock/Prop is not great for cap balance. Perth need Tino as the face of the franchice. For Tino it is all about money. He has a premiership ring, has played for QLD and Aus, now is going to cash in. "
