Jarryd Hayne squandered the chance to score his first NFL touchdown against the Detroit Lions because he failed to follow instructions, San Francisco 49ers offensive co-ordinator Geep Chryst has revealed. After getting a surprise promotion from the practice squad, Hayne had a golden-opportunity to get into the end zone for the first time but failed to stick to the plan."We got a little frustrated with him the very first drive," Chryst said on Friday."Jarryd was so excited to run his route, we got the match-up we wanted on a linebacker."(I said) remember now Jarryd, all you have to do is go up into him five yards and break out (sidestep) and you'll be right there for a touchdown."But he didn’t even get back to the line of scrimmage and he was breaking out. He was so excited to be playing."Hayne, who is still in the mix to play in Monday’s (AEDT) season-ending clash against the St Louis Rams, admits he blew it."Yeah definitely … the more you can sell the route, the more they're going to overplay it, especially with running back speed," Hayne said."Looking back, those are the things I wish I had done better. It would have opened my area of the field up a lot more and created a bigger space to run through."I definitely understood that and I think we spoke about that yesterday, just being a bit overexcited and just trying to get out of my route a bit quicker than I should have."I definitely should have sold it a lot more and opened the space up."The former NRL star is yet to find out if he will get one more chance to right his wrongs this season against the Rams. From sportal or whatever it is called nowHe remains committed to making it in the NFL next season but admits he is counting the days before he is back in Australia drinking good coffee and hitting the beach.Chryst, who is no certainty to keep his own job next season, is upbeat about Hayne’s future prospects as an NFL player."I think he'll become a really dynamic special teams player on both sides of the ball," Chryst said."I think he can run, I think he’s big, I think he is hard to block and I think as he works on fielding punts he’s going to be a really exciting player to watch moving forward and we really like him."From sporting news

  • Tomsula looks like he slept under a bridge whenever he shows up and what sort of name is Geep Chryst ?????
  • Geez must be a really predictable game if you're guarenteed to score just by running the exact right lines.
  • I want to comment about this, but don't know what to say. *yawn* lol
    • Haynes not the only bloke in history not able to sell a root ....wats the issue ?
    • But every bloke once in that gap, should be able to make it a good root all the way
  • I really have virtually no appreciation of this game. All I read from these comments is the production of automotrons that are expected to move like athletic versions of chess pieces. I know that plenty of knowledgeable rugby league people enjoy it, but it seriously does nothing for me.
    • X2
    • Hi 60s, I think that u have hit the nail on the head with your reference to Chess pieces. NFL really strikes me as a game of Footy Chess comprising distinctive set plays with one side executing an offensive play directly offset with the opposing team executing a complimentary defensive play then when each set is executed, the players line up to undertake the next set.

To the uninitiated including myself, it seems motion-ally erratic until a line break occurs. A series of stop & start sets with the game seeming to not really flow.  Even the QB seems very restricted with controlling strictly defined plays. I know that we have structured play in the NRL but we also seem to have a blend of ad hoc involvement by the players.

I can partially understand the frustrating comments by both the coaches & Hayne. Disciplined & structured play expected by the coaching staff versus the instinctive nature of Hayne with the ball in hand. In a nutshell, team play versus individual initiative.

    • Yes it may seem like a football chess which is boring.... Obviously you don't like chess lol. What I have found is that it is a acquired taste and you learn to appreciate the skill involved the more you watch and learn about it
  • Haha I guess that explains no girlfriend, wife or even a one night stand.
