Eels reportedly chase Burton

The Parramatta Eels will reportedly make a move for Matt Burton to partner Mitch Moses in the halves

Braith Anasta believes he would be a perfect fit.

“Moses wants to run the team. That’s his style. Burton is quiet, he has a simple game plan running the ball and he’s a great kicker. You’d think that would be a really good combination,” Anasta said via NRL 360.

“If I’m the Eels, I’m going for Burton if he wants to play six and not willing to stay at the Bulldogs in the centres."

Burton becomes a free agent on November 1.

  • More so they should chase instead of will chase.

    • Comprehension is lacking here haha

Yes, it's just Anasta and the panel suggesting Parra should chase Burton.

I recall Gus eluding to the fact that Burton would most likely be offered a centre money than a 5/8 money when his contract is up for renewal. I highly doubt Burton will be at the Dogs when his contract is up. Bears will be more desperate to land him, seeing as Meninga is under pressure to land a big name, IMO.

      • Meninga is likely to be gone come Round 1.

Typical of him to quit when things don't go his way. Politically, he resigned from QLD job after game 2 in 2006, before QRL said to ride it out be they won all those series, now this it seems.

Ben Gardiner is not seeing eye to eye with Mal. NRL hired Gardiner to replace Meninga in 2029 without his approval. They stuffed this whole thing up big time.

        • I was surprised when he was named Bears head coach. I get Perth needed a high profile figure but TBH Meninga is not club land head coach material. If anything PNG would have suited him, with much lower expectations of PNG being successful in the short to medium term.

          • Originally BA was going to get it. I feel BA was the perfect coach for Perth as he is a team builder, players love him and has family in Perth from his wife's side so he would be comfortable living there. But then the NRL had this bright spark idea to combat the Perth media that is anti rugby league, get a familiar face there and use their charisma to get them onside. Issue is Mal Meninga, though a great player, is not as charasmatic as people think. As i mentioned above, he gives up quite a bit. Who's to say if Perth finish 2027 with the spoon he wouldn't just quit.

But they thought his persona would get people on board and it just has not. A lot different to someone like Bennett or Bellamy or Gould. So they went for a familiar face over an actual decent coach who would not care what media is thinking he would just get players on side. Plus also, he would have had a year in ESL, he would have had connections to get to the club.

NRL stuffed it up big time, he still lives in QLD for christ sakes, thats a bloke with one foot out the door. Wonderful player, overrated personality.

            • He is a total Myth in the coaching ranks and is about has intelligent as a potato.   At the mo its a great payday and by all accounts he has been pretty much MIA in the roster planing and development.   He will be gone in 2028 for sure.  No team full of immortals or an elite assistant team as in the qld set up..

It might be shorter then his political career now that was Churchillian

              • Meninga lives off how people see him. Nobody can make fun of him, if they do they'll hear about. Deep down he's actually weak competitively.
He came to Perth as the saviour that's why he took it and now it is harder than thought he is looking for a way out and it is in fighting with Ben Gardiner.

you say MIA with recruiting yet that's the reason he was hired. The NRL, as do everyone, over judge him as a personality. BA actually would have been a better pick up.

People say he had a hand in QLD dynasty, but when you have a spine of Slater, Thurston, Cronk and Smith player 95% of the games, my 18 month old could probably coach them to victory. That spine did all the heavy lifting as a captain coach.

                • His political career gave an insight into the man and his tenacity and willingness to learn new things and do things the hard way:

                  https://www.reddit.com/r/AustralianNostalgia/comments/1k1u8lc/mal_m...

Great on the field, and living off of that ever since. He's got as much depth as a Ken doll.

                  • I got nothing against him living of his playing day legacies....more a reflection of the suckers who hired him... I agree BA would be better suited.

People also forget his tenure at the Goldie...that all ended in tears too.

The Bears clusterfuck going to be hilarious ...maybe help get the media eyes of our dopey team hahahaha

Look at the Dolphins, They had Bennett/O'Sullivan and a great Rugby league pedigree in the club and it still took them a few years to find their feet....

                    • I remember when Matty Johns had the triple M grill team show, Chris Page was on it then he did some parts with the Matty Johns show. Anyway he said one day he made a joke on the Matty Johns show about Mal (Everyone was made fun of). The next day walking through Fox Sports, Mal walks past him and says "Oh it's the funny man" with a stern look.

He loves himself and if someone dares be human and have a sense of humour you are the problem, if you don't see him as a god you are a problem. That's his issue, if Perth fails, which during his time it will, it will be a mark on his resume. He can see that and will try and get out.

They hired Mal for PR, not coaching. Big mistake, considering those in WA either don't know who Mal is or don't care who he is. BA would have been a coaching hire and he has been through building a club before. Being patient wouldn't bother him.

So instead they now more likely go into the pre-season with a rookie NRL coach.
