arramatta now has a headache at five-eighth, Eels legend Peter Sterling says, thanks to the form of Jaeman Salmon in Dylan Brown’s absence.
Brown, 19 this week, has been missing since round three due to bone bruising in his back. He’s been tipped as a future star of the game after his impressive start to the season and the Eels are keen to extend his contract, which runs until the end of next year.
That means he will be free to negotiate with other clubs from November, having already been pursued for big money by the Warriors. Yet 20-year-old Salmon has performed well alongside re-signed halfback Mitchell Moses in Brown's absence, notching a pair of try assists in Saturday’s 38-10 win over Brisbane.
“I like the side when Jaeman Salmon is at five-eighth,” Sterling said on Sterlo’s Wrap.
“Now I know Dylan Brown is not far away from coming back, but Jaeman Salmon – I think they play their best football when he’s been in their No.6; considering the fact that Dylan Brown was only there for the opening games of the season.”
Parramatta won two of their first three games with Brown at five-eighth and have gone 5-6 since. They are 4-3 in games where Salmon has played No.6 and went 1-3 in a four-game stretch where he was left out for Will Smith. Saturday was Salmon’s return match after that absence.
Salmon missed round one due to a club-imposed suspension over a drink-driving conviction, then played rounds two and three off the bench. The playmaker made his Eels debut last season and like Brown, is contracted until the end of next year.

Not really a headache. Just play Brown off the bench to begin with, ease him back in giving Salmon a break. Then eventually move to starting Brown with Salmon on the bench as he can sub for halves or centre depending on injuries etc. It's a great luxury we haven't had in a while.
Mate you are an idiot. Straight out, you must be effin stupid to put brown on the bench lol dumbest thing ive ever heard
He has been out with an injury, he has no match fitness, what is the point of rushing him? To get injured again? Yeah that's smart.
Pops, agree re reserve grade the way it is now. The question to me regarding that is what is the alternative?
There has bee a couple of blogs on the Wenty situation and with both Eels and Wenty contracted players in the team, and in some ways its a disincentive for Eels and probably Wenty players as well with playing for a team that really does not have its own identity. The coaches are usually appointed or are in the eels camp, which has not really helped them either.
Thankfully, or hopefully this will change from next season when the Eels will field their own team in whatever name that comp will go under, and with the team playing in eels colours and within the overall squad will help in the development of the players. It also means a direct relationship down to the Flegg players as well.
I watched a highlights of the eels Flegg side scoring 3 tries in the last 5 minutes against the warriors, and certainly the 7, 9 and 13 played very good, the 13 is a big lump of a player and had speed on his side as well, scoring two tries one through strength and the other over 50mtrs.
There’s no headache Salmon is perfect off be bench. Don’t really buy into Salmon being a centre he’s hardly fast or can break a tackle.
Sterlo thought Luke Kelly was a good first grade half. Maybe Sterlo should stick to the Austin Power movies.
Luke Kelly is one of the worst players I have ever seen. I'll tell you how bad he is. In his final year of playing, he was dropped from the Souths starting lineup to play for Norths in reserve grade. I watched him play a few games there and he did nothing, then he was dropped from Norths to play with Asquith in the Ron Massey Cup.
Imagine have Luke Kelly and Will Smith as your halves combo....Enough to make even the happiest person self-harm.
