It just shows how much raw undeveloped talent is really out there. It's almost endless, we just need to get these guys into NRL club systems, preferably at a young age. PNG just need 30 or 40 NRL players to be as strong a force as Tonga. This is the key to growing the game, get these guys into the NRL.
It says a lot about a player when they claim man of the match honours despite playing for the losing side — and that’s exactly what Papua New Guinea hooker Edwin Ipape did.
Tonga escaped with a 24-18 win over PNG but Ipape was the standout, setting up a try, getting a linebreak, a linebreak assist, three tackle busts and running for 107 metres.
The 23-year-old has been playing for Leigh Centurions in the UK’s second divison but held his own on the field alongside the likes of NRL stars Alex Johnston and Justin Olam and up against some of the best in Daniel Tupou, Addin Fonua-Blake and Tevita Tatola.
Ipape has a little bit of history in the NRL. He trained with Manly’s NRL squad during the 2020 pre-season and featured in for the Sea Eagles in the Perth Nines competition. He then joined Queensland Cup side PNG Hunters last year before making the move to the UK to play under Kumuls legend Adrian Lam at Leigh.
Ipape had a breakout season for Leigh, finishing as the Betfred Championship Player of the Year and helping them win promotion to the Super League for next year.
Given the shortage of genuine — and quality — hookers in the NRL, Ipape could pick up a train-and-trial opportunity at the very least if he continues to impress at the World Cup
Makes you wonder about what's doing behind the scenes when the guys been in and around NRL clubs and playing in comps heavily scouted by clubs , and yet can't attract a club to take a punt on him.

"I don't mean to be rude Pou, but that whole comment is hot garbage..anyone from a low socioeconomic background is not suffering the effects of persecution on a whole population. In Australia, only Aboriginals have claim to that

Is he the player that set up the Lachlan lam try? Game of the tournament so far, PNG should have won and bombed a heap of opportunities

Not many of them would move from png though. Rather family over dollars.

Not as easy as just plucking a guy from a village , throwing him into the middle of Parramatta and expecting him to become the next Semi or Sivo .
Which is why you have to get them younger, preferably as teenagers
Are you sure your names Brett and not Woody ?
I don't think Woody was interested in little boys
