Dump the Cap

For far too long, the cap has benefitted certain teams over others.Get rid of it. May I suggest that it gets replaced with each team allowed to spend say 8 million on player salaries with no other payments topping up players salaries like as present. The NRL can put in say 6 million and the rest can be made up by business sponsorships or by the Leagues club. Each team is asked to nominate 2 marque players - worth say 4 poinand then have a point system h player is graded points 1 - 3 and each club is allowed so many points eg

  • How do you judge what a player is worth in points?

      • Isn't that based on what level the player plays? Eg. NSW cup = 3 points RMC = 2 and Shield =1.
  • i agree, been saying it for years.

  • Yep this is without doubt the best option because it wont limit a players earning capacity but it will stop clubs from hoarding the cream of the crop.

I dare say the Roosters, Dogs, Broncos, Eagles wouldn't like it but all the more reason to introduce it.

  • So you're only taking in account games played and rep honours? As we've seen in rep teams this season the players picked aren't necessarily a better player than those not picked.

I don't think a points system also takes into account if a player wants to stay or go to a certain club. Say if you've grown up in Townsville and have everything set-up there you would take less money to stay up there whereas the points system may force them to move. Some may say this is a positive of the system but with player welfare on the agenda I don't think this would help that.

I don't think any system is the absolute correct one, or at least a system like that hasn't been thought of. Atm I believe our current system where the clubs determine how much a player is worth (for the most part) is the better system than the NRL having full-control on a player's worth to a club.
  • Also would this sytem be an overall point system (must be or under 100 points) or would it be that teams can only have 1 player worth 20 points 4 worth 15 points etc?

Because with an overall points system the clubs with more money would still be able to afford the better players they'd just srround them with below average players much like they already do.
  • Agree

  • There will always be ways to manipulate the cap. There is no perfect system.
  • How can a points system be manipulated when the clubs dont decide what points a player is worth?

The clubs would be free to pay all their players whatever they like as the monetary value becomes meaningless to the NRL.
A points system ensures each club simply can't horde the best players and will even out the talent pool guaranteed.
How some on here can't see it is mystifying.
    • So the points system that you're suggesting would be that certain clubs can only have 1 player worth 15 points, 4 players worth 10 points (or however you want to divide it up)?

Would there then be a "2nd tier" points cap so that club like ourselves can have a large squad or does every player that the club signs come under the only points cap?
