Do you follow another sport or team that stirs your emotions?

I've been following the Eels ever since my mum bought me a Parramatta Eels library bag in 1975

I was fortunate to witness the mighty Eels win four premierships and have fond memories of the glory days.

I remember catching two trains and a bus to Cumberland Oval and later to Belmore Oval and again to Parramatta Stadium after 1986 witnessing Steve Sharp score the first ever try at the Stadium, I still have that game along with all televised from the 80's games recorded on VHS.

I don't recall ever missing a home game, it was and still is a major part of my life. I would look forward to Wednesdays,The Big League was released and  I would bolt from the School bus to the newsagent.

I would open the magazine praying to see a Parra team poster or a Parra player. I still have all Parra related posters in mint condition.

I like sport in general, I enjoy test match Cricket and watch a few Wanderers games however neither team stir my emotions like the Eels do.

I recall walking down O'Connell street after a loss against the Bulldogs, I had a Bulldogs fan beating a drum behind me, I finally snapped, turned around and confiscated his drum sticks. I was furious and he knew it, nor he or his friends had the balls to ask for them back.

I had grand final party in 2001, I needed two TV's to accommodate the crowd, my wife's friend brought her husband who invited his mate who I'd never met.

This bloke was cheering every Newcastle try and he was a Bulldogs supporter. We were outside having a smoke during half time, this bloke puts up his fist in my face and screams "Newcastle!" in my face.

I gave him a half hearted jab on the chin and unfortunately he flung his head back against the pylon of my carport and required stitches to his head.

The point I'm trying to make is, I'm usually a rational person, the Eels bring out the best and worst in me.

I'm floating on cloud 9 on a Monday when the Eels win and mega pissed off when they loose. Needless to say I've spent many a Monday in an angry mood since 1986.

My question is, does anyone here follow another team that stirs their emotions like the Eels do?

  • Aussie cricket side. Last ashes series will live with me forever. Also Manchester United. Usual emotion from them is ecstatic to win games, titles and cups. Now the only emotion they give me is depression.

  • I used to get into the Sydney Kings basketball back in the Steve Carfino "Cardiac Kids" days.

Lost interest after a few years.

  • Twiddly Winks. Love it. Plus Pub darts. Love throwing the darts at other people's heads and laugh if it sticks in. What else...Lingerie Gridiron, women volleyball, women having catfights, love it...oh that's not a sport but it is entaintering though...netball, yeah that's all.....

  • 49ers. Shattered they lost the super bowl to the Ravens and the game was similar to the 2001 GF smashed by half time, but a late comeback but all too late.
  • Nothing else comes close to the Eels for me. But I do casually follow a few other teams: Adelaide Crows, Melbourne Victory, Baltamore Ravens, Houston Rockets, Swansea and Rafael Nadal.

  • motorsport is not a sport.

  • I thought it was just me Wizards.

  • Exactly.

You can call them "activities" if you like, but don't call them "sports". maybe a bit harsh on bmx though.

Sex is more of a sport than those things.  Unfortunately, my average is pretty low.

  • Nothing comes close for me. I love cricket and don't mind AFL occasionally, but these have nothing on my passion for footy and the Eels in particular.
  • Joe I watch other team sports but no other team has ever come as close to the mental anguish and sheer moments of joy provided by the Eels. They are the only team in sport that has total control over my mood. Ask my wife.

The only sporting team that comes remotely close is Socceroos when competing in a major tournament. So hard not to ride that wave of emotion whenever the Aussies are on that big world stage.
